Kids Writing Workshop: Week of March 24th

Hi everyone! Let's get the writing workshop started! This week's writing inspiration is "Scranimals" by Jack Prelutsky. If you can't find the book at your local library, you can search inside it on amazon.com here - http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/B000...pt#reader-link

How the writing workshop works:
However you want it to Post your child's made up animal and poem here any time during the week of March 24th. Link us to a picture if your child drew one to go with it. I will try to keep the thread bumped daily so it doesn't get buried. You can jump in any day of the week, and can jump in on the week you want and opt out of the weeks you don't. It's good to be a homeschooler

Anyone with ideas for inspiration for next week, post them here as well.

My kids want to reread the book again tonight before they do any creating/writing for themselves, so I will have to come back and post their poems later on or tomorrow.

I thought it would be fun We ended up watching Walking with Dinosaurs tonight and didn't get to reread the book, so that's on tap for tomorrow.

The Avocadness Monster (A cross between an avacodo and the Loch Ness Monster)
by Michael, age 9

Some think you're scary
And enormously hairy,
But I think you're sweet
'Cause if you're real, your to eat.
The Avocadness Monster
Might be real or not, sir,
But one thing is sure--
If you're a fruit, we want more!

The Piggolo (A cross between a pig and a piccolo)
by Katie Grace, age 6

The piggolo squeals
And rolls in the muck.
He gets all dirty
And his holes get stuck.

He goes to his bed
And lies down in the hay.
His mother picks him up
And washes him--YAY!

He squeals a shrill
And whistling tune.
He squeals so loudly
That it bounces off the moon.

They drew pictures too, which I'm putting on my blog.

ETA: Pictures are here.

Those are great! and I am lol because the first poem Kenna started to write was about the Lilacness Monster - cross between a lilac and the lochness monster!

Here is McKenna's, age 7.5:
Triceratopthalmosaurus (cross between triceratops and opthalmosaurus)

Triceratopthalmosaurus
Tried to sing in the chorus
But the land was too dry,
The water was too wet
And he couldn't sing anything for us.

Here is Holden's, just turned 4:
Maple Tree Frog (Cross between a maple tree and a tree frog)

The maple tree frog couldn't get into the valley
But the other frogs were already in the valley
The maple tree frog was too slow
The other frogs were faster to go
But the maple tree frog couldn't get into the forest

(After this it went off into a 10 minute long stream of story that I couldn't get all of!)

We are working on pictures today.

McKenna just wrote another one:

Bearaconda

Poor Bearaconda
Your troubles are never to end
You try to be friendly
but your sisters envy
You and you're scary

What should we do next week? Even if it is just the two of us again Annette, I think it is worth it. My kids had a great time, and told everyone their poems for the past two days. They think it is the "bestest" that their poems are online and that other kids' poems are too!

That would be great! We're looking at Maxwell Parrish's art work, so I'd love to do something fairy tale-ish. Maybe something like look at a piece of art and write a story/paragraph to go with it?

Hi. This sounded like a fun idea so we got the book and read it yesterday. My kids are working on their ideas. This is what my daughter(8) came up with:

Elappo(part elephant, part apple)

Elappo, Elappo oh
Elappo you are so
big. Elappo so big
you are. You are my favorite
scranimal. Elappo
I love you so much.

My dd did this assignment last week but she doesn't want to post online. (which I totally respect and so I am not going to post anything)

She loved the workshop idea and spent several hours on various parts of the task!

We will gladly do more of these or come up with ideas, anything to support this project!
