My ds wants his mohawk dyed blue. I bought some stuff at Sally and the girl told me it would work without bleaching his hair. It's pretty dark brown with a lot of lighter color in it. Is there anything that will give him a decent amount of blue without going through the trouble of bleaching it? I'm ok with doing home hair color stuff, but bleach goes a bit beyond my capabilities!

it will show better on the lighter stuff, and only be seen as a highlight on the darker stuff
bleaching is the easiest thing in the world, and if you get the stuff from sally, it can cost like $3. you just get a bottle of developer, and this powdered scary crap and mix them.
it stinks really bad. and if his hair was ever dyed before, it might not work on the old dye.

You really do need to bleach it, I don't like the midnight blue (manic panic) because it really only looked bluish in the sun otherwise it just looked black. Also it bleeds a lot at first (true of all temp dyes) and when it starts fading it will turn greenish.

I recently put blue streaks in my hair, and I bleached the strands beforehand. All of my hair is dark brown, though... The dye might show up on the lighter parts of his hair, if they're a very light brown or blond color. By the way, just an FYI: I used Manic Panic After-Midnight Blue dye, and it definitely did *not* turn out dark blue for me.. It's teal. I think I look like a mermaid.
ETA: Thanks Sharlla, that explains a lot, lol!

I tried to dye the underside of my hair blue a couple months ago with color I got from Sally's. My hair is a medium brown color. I did not do any bleaching. It came out this weird darker color with kinda a dirty dark blue tint to it. Washed out in a week. I think if you want it to show up and last, you're going to want to bleach his hair first.

BTW if you do bleach it it won't ever really wash out, just fade to pastel, so you will either have to cut or dye back to original color someday.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't think that the blue would take, but the girl at Sally assured me it would
We've decided to just bleach it and if school gives hima hard time we'll buzz the whole head. It will back in two weeks away
