That is true in your area, but not mine. AT&T offers a DSL product on a dry loop, which is what my SIL uses. She gets DSL internet service through her phone lines, but has no telephone service. My husband and I were going to sign up for it ourselves, but there is a limited number of hubs and there were none available when we went to sign up. So we are stuck with Comcast for the time being ($45/month for actual speeds of 1.4Mbps! We have NEVER experienced the 6.0 they advertise!)

Hmmm... This is all very interesting to think about. We've had dial-up internet always until we moved here, and now we live on a campus (dh is getting his phd) and have wireless included with the rent. Guess this is something we'll have to work out when we move. My guess is we'll go to having one cell phone and get a landline as well. I miss having a landline in some ways, largely, I think, because I'm a closeted Luddite, so it'd be fine with me to go back to having one and get our internet that way...

eta -- hey -- where did this herring quote come from!?

You don't have to hook up the cable to the TV. Or you could use a different DSL provider. Any DSL company can go through your telephone company to provide DSL service for you. It may not be cheaper though.
