Here's a fun one for you doulas out there..

Ever have a mother-in-law hire you for their son and daughter-in-law so that they can have a natural birth? I guess the "fun" part is that the mother-in-law wanted me to change the birth plan which based on the parents-to-be decisions to fit her definition of a natural birth.
Just wondering...
Any other stories out there that are similar?

WOW! Talk about control issues, eh?

I've had parents hire me, but never for their own "interest".

Sticky!

Huh?!?

That doesn't sound like a situation I'd want to take on. Did the birthing couple get to choose you or did the MIL? Are they able to take responsibility for their own choices or being railroaded by MIL?

Very strange and dicey indeed...

It seems that I'm the queen of crazy situations. When the MIL emailed me to critique my birth plan, I informed her that these were the choices made by her son and daughter-in-law and my job as their doula is to help fulfill THEIR wishes for THEIR child's birth. (I of course said it a little bit nicer than this, but that's the gist of it..)

Oy!

Do the parents want a doula? Is the mil going to be at the birth? I'd make sure the parents are really clear about that. Sounds like she has some control issues!

I've been hired as a gift for someone, but not by a family member.

RE: Here's a fun one

I once had a lady hire me for her daughter who was having an unmedicated hospital birth. Went really well got her to the hosp at 8cm and she had the baby an hour later. First time mom too. Her mother ended up being a wonderful support person the whole family just looked at unmedicated birth as a part of life! I just love that!

I would take that job, just to help the couple protect themselves from the MIL, and enforce THEIR desires!!

I am curious what specifically her definition included? How bizarre!?!

That's a new one! Do the parents really want a doula or are they just doing it to appease the MIL?

They seemed interested after hearing about what a doula does during labor. They said their MIL was the one who said they should have a doula after reading about doulas somewhere.
I'm interested in how this labor and delivery will go since the MIL will be present.
