i am thinking about after i have my home birth how do i get my child covered under my insurance. i should probably just call them and ask. what has been your experience with it. i know how i will get the birth certificate so i am not worried about that.

We have 30 days to report the birth, hospital or home birth, without much problems. Then when we get the birth cert. and SSN we just send it in.
It's been this way with several ins. companies we've had over the years Aetna and MVP included.
I'd call them ahead of time and just ask "How do I add my baby to the ins?" it might not even matter that they were born at home.

It's easy. They didn't ask for a birth certificate...in fact DH's HR department started the paperwork when he sent out the e-mail to his co-workers announcing our new arrival Just make sure you do it within 30 days. I don't think they asked for the SSN until we actually changed insurance carriers four months later and then they needed SSN for the whole family.

: to what PPs have said. It's not that hard - all we had to do was call the insurance company and let them know within the first 30 days.

Homebirth won't have anything to do with it. For my insurance, I just have to file the one page sheet within 30 days of the birth. If the birth certificate hasn't come yet (which it won't have) I just have to include a letter from my midwife (or someone else) attesting to the baby's birth date.

I agree with everyone else. File a paper within 30 days and they are covered. Talk to your HR department to get the form or just call the insurance company. My form actually had a little box to check that said homebirth.

We just talked to HR and dh filled out a form.

Nothing to it.

You will want to contact your HR at your workplace to get the forms to fill out. You should not need the SSN or BirthCert. You can call in with the SSN later as it usually takes a month or two to get it. You will want to get the forms filled out and sent in before 30days to ensure the baby gets covered from day one. With some policies if you don't get it in with in that timeframe you would have to wait until open enrollment to add. You don't want to do that. The sooner you send it in the better, as your providers will be sending in their claims once the baby is born. The insurance won't be able to pay them until the baby is added so ASAP and before 30days.

We're military, so the baby was automatically covered for the first 30 (or maybe it was 60?) days on Tricare Prime. In order to maintain coverage, my husband had to take a copy of the birth certificate application and SS card to the ID office on base and file some paper with his command to enroll the baby in DEERS, which also enrolled him in Tricare (Standard). He had some trouble getting it through their heads that we didn't have "the paper from the hospital" because we never went to the hospital, but eventually it all worked out.
