How much/often to take Vitex?

I've been taking Vitex for a while now just 1 400mg capsule a day, but I was reading the Fertility Friend boards and some of the gals there take it twice or three times a day. What is the proper dosage?

I take Vitex in capsule form. It's Nature's Way, Vitex Fruit 400mg. I take it twice a day, so 800mg per day.

I took higher doses last summer and I think it just mixed my body up. More is not always best.

I've been on this dose for 3 cycles and do see somw improvement with my LP, EWCM and Ovulation. I believe it has also raised my progesterone levels, cause I feel like I did when I was taking Progesterone Cream (sore breasts, odd dreams).

Good luck! And be sure to give it a good 3 months before you decide whether it's working or not.

Stevi, Do you take it your whole cycle or stop with ovulation? I just bought some as well and am curious...

Dosage is very individual. It really depends on how much help your body needs to regulate it's own hormones.

I took an herbology class at a conference a couple weeks ago, and vitex was one of the herbs discussed. She indicated that she would have her clients start at 2 pills once a day. If that was not effective, she would add 1 at night, then increase to 2 at night, and may even go as high as 3 pills 3x/day, depending on what was effective with that client.

One really important detail though was to take them on an empty stomach with water only, and not to eat anything for 30 minutes after. And that it may take up to 6 months for the full effects to be felt.

I'm at the 2 pills first thing in the morning stage.

BTW, I take the dose it suggests on the bottle.

Reina28... I take Vitex my entire cycle. I don't think stopping and starting things that effect my hormones are a good idea. And, mine says right on the bottle that the best results are obtained through long-time use. I've also read you should keep taking it until you reach your second trimester, then slowly wean off of it.

Cristeen... On an empty stomach? Are you sure? My Vitex is a powder in capsules, if I do not eat right after taking them, I actually burp the powder up into my throat! Blech! I take one dose with breakfast and one with dinner.

Maybe the speaker at that class was speaking of a form of Vitex pill only, and would say differently for capsules? Then again, I have Reflux, so maybe I'm just wierd.

I've only ever seen Vitex in capsule form.

She was very clear about an empty stomach. Because if you have any food in your stomach at the same time, the vitex is competing with the food for uptake. So you want to take the Vitex on an empty stomach or else you will need a larger dose in order to get the same effect you would have if you took it on an empty stomach. If you take it on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before eating, your body has already absorbed it by the time the food starts digesting.

Hopefully I explained that clearly enough.

This is the kind that I am taking: http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/e...eyword=KA-1753 Is there anything in here that could decrease my fertility chances?

Peeking in from Oct DDC to check on you lovely ladies!

I take 1600mg of Vitex once a day. I took it for a few cycles while TTC, continuously, and am continuing it through my 1st tri so I don't cause any issues with imbalanced hormones. HTH and GL!

Hi Tara! Good to see you checking in on us!

Question for you... all the things I have read on Vitex said to stop taking it once getting a BFP... how did you decide to keep taking it?

Cristeen... Okay. I checked my Vitex bottle, it doesn't say whether or not to take it with food. I do it because otherwise my acid starts roiling up and the Vitex backs up into my throat. Vitex must irritate my stomach, as I said I have Acid Reflux. So, not all doses, methods, etc are the same for everybody, I guess. Just like TaraRae82 taking 1600mg, when 800mg seems like enough for me.

Reina28... I don't know enough about herbs to tell you anything, sorry. I only know a bit about Vitex, and I'm not an expert about that, either!

TaraRae82... Glad to see you are doing well!!! I'm on cycle 3 of my Vitex, I hope it has positive results for me, as it did for you!

I could be wrong, but wasn't black cohosh supposed to induce abortions back in the 19th century?

: You may be right, Lauren! My Herb book says it was used by Indian midwives to encourage menstruation which is not the effect I'm looking for. Time to do some more in-depth googling. Thanks!

No prob Reina-- I know that Blue Cohosh is forbidden during TTC but I am not sold on the Black either. Let me know what you decide. I really really want to get my period and start ovulating again and I am just so messed up body wise I feel. I am looking great, working out 45 minutes every day on the elliptical and some light yoga and weights, eat right, (too much diet soda ergh DIE-it is more like it) and that dang old O and AF WON'T COME!!!! Good luck, let me know if you have suggestions!

The no food thing wouldn't be a YMMV thing, it would be the difference between needing a smaller dose or a larger dose to get the same effect for yourself. It's about how the body functions as an organism. The difference between a small and large dose between two people is due to your individual body. However, I would question what filler your Vitex uses. When I was buying mine, I noticed that one of my options used millet as a filler. I know that would be a good way for my reflux to kick up. The brand I take uses Magnesium Stearate as the filler, which does not start my reflux up.

I was wondering when you are taking Vitex, are you supposed to take it like Clomid where you only take it during days 3-7 or 5-14 of your period? Or do you take it daily, regardless whether you are on your period or not?

@squid621, read the thread and it will tell you.
