Midwife programs??

I have been looking at many different programs and just can't decide on one. What programs are the best ones?

the best: AAMI
(and it won't kill your pocketbook!)

Maternidad La Luz for academic and clinical experience is excellent.

I am interested in the AAMI, too. Can you take it if you are in an unfriendly state (I'm in IL) to midwives/homebirth?

What is the schedule like? When do you do hands on things and what is the schedule like for apprenticing? I have 4 kids (one a baby), so that is a concern for me and whether I should wait a few years.

You can take it no matter where you live. You do it on your own timeline.

Thanks!

What are the hours like for apprenticing and practical skills? I have the option of asking a family member to live with me when we move and that would help with childcare.

You do this on your own time, at your own pace. There is no strict requirement about your apprenticeship or practical skills. This course is to help you gain a comprehensive knowledge to build on with your apprenticeship. Hope that makes sense.

I've heard Seattle Midwifery School is very good (but pricey).

This was what I was really being drawn to but I guess I just couldn't find the info on the site about this but how does the apprenticship work? Do they give you a list of acceptable preceptors or do you find one and get them approved?

Finding an apprenticeship is up to you. They don't need to be approved. AAMI is the book work aspect of your eduction, and your apprenticeship is the clinical/hands-on aspect.

Feel free to PM me with questions you have about AAMI. I'm a happy student enrolled with there.

Is financial aid available for any of these schools? I would like to do AAMI and it is affordable, but we are barely making ends meet as it is.

I have been approached many times about this very subject. I already have 2 women that work with me so, I really can't help anymore women at the moment. But, I wanted to do something to help these aspiring midwives. So, we started our own little learning group. We have developed a flexible curriculum and started to it. There are a total of seven of us (including myself). We are using the birth song workbook to help guide us. It is really awesome to have a group of women that I can talk to and get together with on a weekly basis.

Now having said all of that...we all live in Kansas which is a free state for midwives. Meaning we are not licensed and regulated by the state.
