The Interweave Knits garter mug cozy pattern is free, but for only a month. Get it while you can--it's a great, easy pattern. I've made 2 and they've been very well received little gifts.

I downloaded the pattern--but my question is, do they actually DO anything, or are they more or less just decorative?

I like the idea of keeping one in my car for when I get coffee out and the cup is too hot to hold!

I think you just answered your own question! They'll protect your hands from a hot mug and help keep your drink warm longer.

I haven't made one yet, so this is just an assumption....and you know what they say about those...

I would think that for a to-go paper cup, you'd be better off making a ribbed tube. I think the fact that this pattern has buttons would mean it would be more likely to slip and slide on a cup where there wasn't a handle to keep it in place.
