Why?

Why does using a hidden layer of PUL and an outer print of some other type of fabric make the diaper leak as opposed to just having a PUL outer? I really don't get this. I know people say it makes the moisture wick but how does it wick through the PUL?

If you're making an aio, then the outer most fabric is turning in at the legs and it draws the moisture to it. If you've bound the diaper with FOE you should have less trouble, but there is still a greater opportunity for wicking. IME pul can get a little damp right around the legs if the babe peed a lot. The PUL isn't really wicking the moisture, but is not completely waterproof either. If that moisture comes into contact with a fabric that does wick - it will suck the moisture up and spread it much more quickly.
Well, that's my go at it

I swear I was going to ask the same thing, Danie! Thanks for the answer, Amber, that makes total sense.

Drat. I really like cute cottons.

There's always embroidery and applique

Tis true. I just have access to hundreds of fabrics at my grandmother's sewing shop and the cutest are 100% cottons. Fabric Finders are so droolworthy it's not even funny.

I can't give up my cotton prints either So I do two things: 1. suck it up and deal with the wicking. Its not THAT big a deal :P At home, its usually a t-shirt and a dipe anyway, so its not getting on clothes. And hey, since I use microfleece as an inner, it pulls the moisture away so well, its impossible to tell if the dipe is wet unless it wicks!

2. I make the fleece inner wider than the PUL and cotton, so it rolls out. Then I don't sew any leg casings, so I'm not puncturing the pul any more than absolutely necessary. Then the fleece rolls out like a happy heiny. Then I make a sort of narrow soaker, so it doesn't get too close to the legs. This has cut down on wicking quite a bit!

I make all of my covers for my son with a cotton outter, hidden pul, and I only have a problem with leaking if he's peed a bunch, or if he fell asleep and was in a diaper too long, that, imo, isn't a problem with the diaper, as it wouldn't have leaked if he hadn't been in it too long. I never have a problem with leaking with a hidden pul over if it fits properly, most times that he's in it too long (say, if he falls asleep for a long nap) they don't even leak. I've heard a lot of people prefer solid pul b/c of this, but I've just never had that problem, and I love my patterned fabric outters
