This Kit Includes:

A sample of Expecta for pregnant and nursing moms.

An excerpt from The Nursing Mother's Companion by Kathleen Huggins, a useful guide filled with tips and suggestions to make breastfeeding a rewarding experience for you and your baby.

A sample of (formula name) to get you started if you choose to supplement. our closest formula to breast milk.

I wonder if thats the normal book or they changed it for the bag?

I think I'm safe with this post LMK if I need to change anything

I really don't like that the baby on the cover looks less than a month old. Is it because that was the best baby/mom combination they could hire or are they marketing to people who are only 4 weeks post partum?

And if a mother decides to supplement as a result of the sample in the kit, are they going to provide, as stipulated in the WHO guidelines, all other formula the baby might eat in the future?

Oh, and it's only an excerpt of the nursing book? Anyone have a doctor who has these available? Mind checking one out and seeing which bits were included? Cynical me says that information about nipple confusion was left out.

I've seen that before but I forget where. It was somewhere online, maybe on the Motherhood Maternity website? But if I was going to get Expecta, I would just get a small bottle instead of that kit. It probably costs less to do that.

Wow, I hadn't even heard of Expecta before. Sheesh, their marketing people are good. That kit looks a new mom square in the eye and says, "Your milk isn't good enough, so take this dietary supplement that is produced by a big scientific, modern corporation that knows what your baby needs. And while you're at it, take this little formula sample as well. You'll probably need it."
Since it says, "For the nursing mom on her first visit," I would expect it's distributed through pediatrician's offices. It blows my mind that any pediatrician would play into that, though.

My sister got some of that stuff at her dr.s appt today. Her regualr doctor was out but i liked this one. More than once she commented on how strange it was that a formula company was giving breastfeeding information. She said to use it as a guide but not the truth. Also as for the pill she said you can break it open and it is good for stretch marks..

my sister is only 20 weeks prego

I remember seeing those in my GYN's waiting room at my last PAP smear- so I think they're aiming them at pg women. It sounds like "expecta" is for "expectant" moms, no?

Oh man. I got "The Breastfeeding Support Kit" at my son's one week checkup. Ours was from Similac and it talked about how to supplement. LOL. Such a pity because the nurse practitioner we saw breastfed her baby or babies and she seemed really supportive of the nursing. I dunno, maybe she was required to give it out???

Anyway we (boyfriend and I) took all the free Similac we got cause we liked the bags. And now we use it to make me chocolate shakes. I didn't want to give it away and we have to get rid of it somehow! It's pretty hard to mix into milk by the way.

Don't they get paid to hand those out? I mean, hospitals do.

=P to them.

I'm so sick of formula being shoved down women's throats.

Sometimes I have to force myself to be happy that I know better and stop feeling sorry for the babies of the women who don't.

I also have been interested in the way formula manufacturers show breastfeeding. Notice the shirt is unbuttoned from the top down exposing as much of the breast as possible. And while I think it is beautiful imagine you are a first time mom on the fence or even ot on the fence about breastfeeding then you see this and you think "wow I should cover up or not nurse in public if I have to show that much skin"

Add it to the list of the ways these corporations undermind breastfeeding. All very calculated.

the one i got at the hospital had the excerpt, and it was decent, but it also had info from similac about weaning and supplimenting

I feel the same way, I really wish sometimes I could just breastfeed all the babies in the world! I thought I was the only one who felt bad for them
