Uterine "Tonus"? Help my friend in Ukraine?

My friend's partner is in the hospital with "tight belly."

She is 21 weeks along, and has felt some extended periods of tightening in her belly. When she went in to get a checkup, her care provider took one look at her belly and said she needed to be admitted to the hospital.

He thinks they're giving her magnesium, and maybe other meds.
So far, the baby has been growing normally. Nobody has said anything to my friend about fetal distress at all- though he is not a native Russian speaker, and they are not legally married, so I don't know how much effort they are putting in to communicating with him. She does speak the language, but they're not allowed much contact when she's there.

Where do you draw the line between normal Braxton-Hicks squeezes and too-long ones? Could this really be a threatening situation?
I remember my belly being hard for quite some time after sex, and being told by my midwives that this was completely normal.

I can't help but wonder whether their ability to pay in cash for everything is encouraging the hospital to provide "the best care money can buy," kwim?

Is there a word for this that I can use to get more info?
Is this truly a dangerous situation?

My gut says, Get Her Home Now, but I'd rather have concrete information

Thanks so much for any help.

Can he get a translator and ask for a 2nd opinion? She should be asking questions like crazy to get the information. It's hard to say what is going on. How long are the BH lasting? How are they evaluating this? Do they think she is in premature labor? Can you send her information on normal pregnancy and questions to ask?

Thank you so much! How perfect.

I haven't heard back from them today- I'll call them in the morning.
(boy, a seven hour time difference is hindering to communication!)

I hate to startle anyone, but maternal care is a bad joke in Ukraine. I am a doula and I'm planning a trip to Ukraine this summer, the whole system is very, very bad. I wouldn't count their hospitals as even being safe. If she's not in real danger I would advise them to get out. Their birth practices are unbelievable...really. I have a friend who is a translator there...what city are your friends in? You can email me at: gentlehandsdundore@yahoo.com if you would like me to see if I can get them in contact with my friend.
