This segment was aired on tv? Wow, I'm shocked. I can't imagine seeing a nursing mother on a children's show these days.

I LOVE it! One of my biggest conflicts is whether to nurse when I am at a playgroup or at my own home having a playdate where there are older kids around because so many haven't ever been exposed to breastfeeding. If a child approaches and asks (and they are curious and usually do) I try to do like the lady in the video, just explain that babies drink their milk from the mommy. I guess if the other moms disapprove they won't invite me back or come over again. shrug

The 8 year old next door recently asked me what "breastfeeding" meant when she heard me say it. A little afraid of causing trouble with her mom, I started out vague "when babies eat from their moms" etc but she kept asking more and more specific questions til I finally explained "the baby sucks the milk from the mommy's nipple". This seemed to satisfy her, but she was so confused, it made me sad. The next day, she had obviously relayed our conversation to her mom because the girl said (when seeing me nurse my baby) "When I was little I did that too but my mom says its not nice to talk about because its 'a mother's business'". We all have to raise our children as we see fit, but I thought it was sad her mom seemed to think BF is inappropriate for children to hear/talk about. Maybe she was just afraid I was bothered by her DD or thought she was being nosy? Anyway, the girl next seemed concerned my 2yo was playing nearby. She whispered "Are you really going to let her see THAT?" I had to laugh to myself because we don't close doors a lot in my house and we all see each other completely naked on a regular basis. But I just told her that there was nothing wrong with BF, it's how our baby eats.

Mr. Rogers had an epidode where lots of babies were shown eating, many of them breastfeeding. It's awesome! It's presented as normal and in a matter-of-fact way. I do believe PBS still shows that episode each year near Thanksgiving time (I think it's the same episode where they show how applesauce is made). Hooray for Mr. Rogers!!

Hey, I've just been reading up on the woman who was in the clip. Buffy Sainte- Marie and her son Dakota "Cody" Starblanket Wolfchild. I knew I recognised her from somewhere, she was a folk-singer and an activist.
Its ironic that youtube took down this video fo her bfing as her music was censored in the 70's too....

Love this clip.

I had a hard time BFing DD and I ended up bottlefeeding because I didn't have any support (still makes me sad)
But I wouldn't (and still wouldn't) be angry if a BFing mama explained to her what she was doing. In fact, I wish we would see a BFing mama so I could explain it to her.
Perhaps I will show her this clip.

I just noticed that Buffy mentions that not all mama's breastfeed, but a lot of mamas do. In the words of Big Bird "that's nice"

That's a great clip. I'm glad they put it back so I could see it. I've seen the Mr. Rogers episode with breastfeeding but didn't know it came on around Thanksgiving each year. I'll have to remember that and try to record it

Firefox has an extension that lets you download youtube videos. If you do that, you could always put it back yourself, next time it gets pulled.

(its called downloadhelper)

It's called mammal babies
some months ago i wrote a posting on my german lactivism blog where i linked to all these sesame street videoclips on youtube: "buffy nurses cody", "mammal babies" and "you're my baby" (original breastfeeding version and new bottlefeeding version).
http://stillzeit.blogspot.com/2007/1...-fernsehn.html

and guess what?
i had to refresh/change all the links to the three videos where breastfeeding is shown because in the meantime they all had been removed by youtube "due to terms of use violation" (fortunately they are all back again). the only link that was online all the time is the bottlefeeding version of the "you're my baby" clip...

your advice to download the videos seems to be necessary. sooner or later the next person will complain and youtube will remove the videos again.
but i still don't understand why they had been removed. there are a lot of other (non sesame street) breastfeeding videos on youtube, so breastfeeding itself can't be the reason.

Actually, I think Sesame St. and other copyright videos get taken down every now and then, I doubt it's because of the nursing.
They get put back pretty quickly, or if they are put up by an number of users, you don't really miss them, cause there are more versions out there.
