I know a while back there was some discussion about what to use in place of mineral oil. I'm reading a book from Real Simple (magazine) and they suggest using walnut oil for oiling boards and wooden spoons.

Good to know. I use coconut oil, but it makes sense walnut oil would work. My only concern would be that it would go rancid more easily....not sure if that would be the case.
And yummy, what a good excuse to buy walnut oil! I still haven't, but I've read it is really tasty for making salad dressing!

I personally wouldn't use walnut oil for a board. Nut oils go rancid pretty quickly. I use linseed oil.

I've usually used olive oil for my wooden tools: spoons and the like.

That is why I decided to go with coconut oil......and yeah, I was thinking that about nut oils. Since nuts in general go rancid easily and they usually say to refrigerate nut oils......

Are you able to find linseed oil that isn't chemically processed? I know in the past it was just seed oil, as it *should* be, but when I've gone to buy it more recently, the containers were full of warnings about birth defects, etc. I looked into it, and apparently it is because of the way it is processed now (with chemicals).

I bought something called "Block Oil for Wood & Bamboo" from World Market. The ingredients are refined seed oil, lemon oil, vitamin E, carotene. It sounds okay, I hope it is.
