Headline News

I was watching Headline News today, Prime news segment. The anchor was interviewing two women in regard to a case where a woman was nursing her child on Freedom Air (I think) in 2006 and was asked to cover with a blanket. The case has not yet been settled in Vermont, but a woman by the name of Julia Morrow, a criminal defense lawyer, was going on and on about how horrible this was. She stated that the mother should have covered up with blanket and said that the child couldn't have possibly needed this for nutrition purposes because he/she was almost 2. She further stated that the child should have been given a PIECE OF CANDY or a coloring book instead because the mother was clearly doing this for behavioral purposes. Anybody else see this?

since when is a criminal defense attorney an expert on child rearing and child development?

That would be "our" Emily Gillette's case. OMG my hr and bp went through the roof (and it's usually realllllly low). My dh is super outraged as well. I showed him a picture I had saved from the original news articles..... flipping ridiculous in every way!! I wanted to smack that lawyer...

I just saw this story too, and I am so at the amazing ignorance displayed by this FEMALE criminal defense attorney. She actually said that she had never heard of a case where a mother breastfed an almost two year old child for nutrition! The anchorman thankfully challenged her on this, saying that he knew of many mothers who breastfed past one year for nutrition, both now and historically. That woman should be ashamed of herself!

My dad said, "Americans just need to get over it. Women breastfeed here and all over the world!"

(He flies a lot and says he has been by sooooo many women who just popped it out and nursed with no cover. He watched me go through all my problems because we were living with them at the time and has no clue why a woman would not choose to breastfeed if she could. He doesn't think it should be an option. I guess that makes him a lactivist. )

DH told me about this story- grrrr. It is exactly that sort of statement that denigrates the choices made by other women and makes us take a step backwards as as society. It is simply hate mongering and playing on the ignorance of some people. DH said the attorney has basically said its unacceptable to nurse a 2-year old. What a sad situation. Of course the root story is awful too; hopefully the woman sues the airline and wins.

Ugh. It's amazing to me the misinformation floating around out there that so many otherwise intelligent adults seem to believe-and perpetuate! My feeling is, even if the mother was nursing "for behavioral purposes" so what?! I nursed DD1 for 20 months and one of the best things about it was the cure-all effect. Yeah, it was great nutrition, but also great for soothing her when she was sick or hurt and calming both of us down in stressful situations. That woman needs to educate herself! BF is way more than food!

I think it's strange that it's acceptable to feed a toddler the toddler-formula formula, but not the breastmilk that the formula is trying to emulate. It's also socially acceptable to give a toddler a pacifier, but not the "original pacifier", the breast.
