Longies out of old sweaters

I've hearn of people sometimes re-using old wool sweaters to make longies. I get that the arms are used for the legs, but what part do you use for the middle/crotch? TIA!

I always looked at the sweater and depending on the neckline and waistline, picked one of those. I always go for super colorful sweaters so whatever had the nicer design and was wide enough for baby. I've even had one that had a drawstring neckline and I used that as the closure for the longies.

I have a pair OTN right now... when I took the sweater apart, I found live stitches on the saddle shoulders, so I frogged them down, to just above where the sleeve shaping started, leaving just enough of the shaping for a crotch. I stitched the arms together at the seams and just started knitting as if they were one piece (with the yarn I frogged).
