YAY Costco!!

My dh works at costco and said that all of the formula was moved over to the pharmacy area. I think that is awesome!! Right back where it was meant to be!

He wasn't sure if it got moved at other warehouses or not, hopefully it did world wide though.

That is awesome! Yes, formula is sometimes needed and should be available, but the fact that it is largely considered the "normal" way to feed a baby is so sad. I love the quote in someone's signature that says something like "formula is to breasts what wheelchairs are to legs". Couldn't have said it better myself!

That's great!

Hmmmm...ours has always been near the Pharmacy as far as I know. We rarely are over in that section but we do cover all other sections, and I've never see in it another section. I'm in Canada, maybe Costco has always had it by the Pharmacy for us?

They probably moved it to the Pharmacy, because the pharmacy is staffed and formula is expensive and often shoplifted.

In the city I live in its behind locked doors and you have to have someone unlock it for you.

I always know when I'm in the suburbs, because the formula isn't locked up.

HA HA...LOL I will have to inform DH that he has no reason to complain about his job until he has worked at a warehouse that has to lock up the baby formula....lol

In in GA and the formula has always been in the pharmacy also. But I think that's just where the baby section is. It's not just formula, but also diapers, wipes, sippy cups, etc.

Woo hoo! Awesome!

I'm in the suburbs, and our formula is locked up, too. Hmmm....maybe I'm just in the bad suburbs. LOL

I was at Costco a couple days ago. Nope, not in the pharmacy and not locked up, but on these huge endcap displays that everyone had to pass by to check out.

At our grocery store the formula, pediasure, and pedialyte were all moved to the front by the checkouts. Too much was being stolen.

I agree, at our costco's it has always been right in front of the pharmacy.

I've been to Costco's in ON, BC and NS all of which have always had the formula by the pharmacy.

The diapers in the places I've been in have been in the opposite corner of the store. PErhaps it's similar to milk and bread placement in a supermarket tho? They make you walk to the back and all over to cover the "essential needs" so you pass by all the other things you don't need but might pick up.

So maybe rather than the implication that it's like a drug or such, they are strategically placing for sales purposes? My guess is that most people that go to Costco to buy formula also buy their bulk diapers, no? If so, they have to cover nearly the whole store to get what they came for... Smart business but not necessarily a hurrah for lactivism, kwim?

Oops-should have clarified. The pharmacy and baby section in our Costco are in the very front next to the check outs. Still they are opposite of the door, so people do have to walk by some stuff, but not that much.

I see what your saying for sure......
but still......to have to buy your baby's formula from the pharmacy area is how it should be. As far as I know...formula was meant for sick babies or babies that were not able to nurse for good reasons. kwim? Like what if you were a new mom and breastfeeding was a little rough and you went to the store to get a few things and had formula with a ? mark next to it on your list. You can't find the formula in the baby section, so you ask an employee...they say, "over in the pharmacy." It certainly would make me think twice about it. It's then more like a drug, and something you are not supposed to overuse or abuse.

eta: Not to mention how do you still have money for the other things after buying formula and diapers. I bet the formula section is where everyone leaves the things that they decided they should not buy today...lol

At the Kroger (grocery store) near my house, the formula is behind the customer service counter. I don't know exactly how it works, but I think you pay for it at the checkout then pick it up at customer service on the way out, but I'm really just guessing since I've never bought any. We live pretty deep in the burbs.

Interesting points. I'm not saying it's not good that they moved it, I'm just pondering whether the move was to benefit the lactivism movement or to simply increase sales, kwim? Either way, it's good.

oh for sure...i have no doubt in my mind that it was for sales purposes, but I think it was a positive change

So, you're in the rough part of the 'burbs, eh?

I have absolutely no idea where the formula is in our Costco that is walking distance away that I am in every week (family of 6 ya know?). NOW, I'm going to have to check though.

Formula has ben locked up or behind the counters around here for a long time.

Not just because of shoplifting, I think - isn't it used to make or cut some types of illicit drugs? So people have to ask for it, and the stores can deny someone who buys a suspicious amount/frequency or whatever.
