Baking with Glass Pyrex

It finally happened to me. I remember reading the post from some of you about the danger of using glass pyrex in the oven. I thought... Well... Since my pyrex dishes are probably at least 15-20 years old, I figured they are of "better quality" and *it won't happened to me.* So, I carry on using them. Yesterday, I decided to make a pancake in the oven at 400F, pour the batter in the dish, and poof-- hundreds of pieces of glass scattered around the oven and on the floor. Luckily, DH and I did not get injure or scratch by any of those glasses. (We just need to figure out how to clean the oven and remove those pieces of glasses inside) any ideas?

But ladies/gents, if you are still using those glass pyrex in the oven, please reconsider, and it truly *might* happen to you.

Wow, I've never heard of such a thing! I have a Pyrex baking dish that my mom used for years, and it's my very favorite (and most used!) cooking item! Oh, no!!!

I didn't even know you could make pancakes in the oven.

I have glass bakeware, but it isn't pyrex, (Corningware) and I only use them for caseroles. But, I do use some Pyrex in the microwave. Is the microwave safe?

Wow. I thought pyrex was oven-safe. I use mine in the oven and microwave all the time.

Incidentally, I have had the exploding-pyrex thing happen when I put it on the stove top once. I know, I know - you're not supposed to - but it was the perfect thing to make soaps in!

One thing to be very careful about with Pyrex is not to change its temperature suddenly. So, for example, if the Pyrex dish were hot and the pancake batter were room temperature or cooler, that could have caused it to shatter. I will continue to use mine in the oven but I do try to be careful with it, and always set it on a towel or wooden trivet when it comes out. I also try to check all my glass bakeware and measuring cups and mixing bowls for cracks or any little defects regularly.

So, I will continue to be aware of the risks and try to minimize them, I guess is what I'm saying!

Yep. Any glass (that I am aware of) will shatter if you change temperature too quickly.

OP, I've had that happen to me and I just waited for the oven to cool off then used a shop-vac to get all the glass pcs out. It was tedious cleaning up all the glass!

i will NEVER use one again, after my mil (who didn't believe me and continued to use hers) took one out one day and it exploded ALL OVER THE KITCHEN!!! we couldn't get out, almost all of us got shards in our feet trying to get out of the kitchen. the shards landed all in the food, dinner had to be thrown away... it was a MESS!!!!! i will never take that chance of it exploding with my kids around. i use corning ware. (can you bake in cast iron frying pans?)

Yep, german pancake was what I was making... i let it sit for a while and make sure it's not too cold...I don't have a cast iron pan, do have a le creuset pan, but I was worried that it will stick. It's not truly "non-stick" yet....

thanks for the shop vac idea. I will definitely do that.

Would things like Fiesta Ware baking dishes be safer? I have 3 pyrex dishes I bake in regularly, but I've been looking at buying some Fiesta Ware.
