How to write about nursing rooms?

Have you ever written letters regarding nursing rooms -- or the lack thereof? How did you word your letters? Did you show them to any LLL members or have other nursing women sign a petition?

I ask because today, I went to nurse my son in The Bay (Canadian Dep't store) and their "nursing" room was disgusting. It was a plastic chair, without arms, beside a toilet and a change table in a stinky, dirty bathroom.

I left the store.

In contrast, in Sears in the same town, there is a large, carpeted room, with toys, change tables, and two rocking chairs.

We're allowed to nurse our babies pretty much anywhere in Canada, so perhaps The Bay didn't see a "need" for a nursing room?

It just depresses me that this isn't the first time I've seen this sort of set up. The mall where The Bay was in has a "mother's room". The mother's room has a leather chair with arms... beside a toilet... beside the main washroom.

I feel that nursing rooms are necessary. Yes, we should normalise breastfeeding by feeding wherever, whenever. But not every woman is as comfortable with her body -- or her nursing relationship. For example, when DS was very small, I couldn't even position him properly to latch him, and just getting him to start sucking was at least a couple minutes worth of screaming.

I think a lot of women feel the same.

So back to the original question -- have you ever written a store about their nursing/mother's rooms, and if so, what did you say in the letter?

I haven't written such a letter since I've never come across such a gross one-yuck! I'm so sorry you had that experience! I agree that nursing rooms should be available for those who like to use them, but it shouldn't be required that mothers only nurse there. I used them the most with DD1 when she was at that easily distracted stage and I had trouble keeping her latched anywhere but the most quiet, boring room possible!
I think LLL would be a good place to start. Good luck!

I would love to see comfortable nursing rooms in stores/malls, etc. I would also love to see signs in each and every one of them that say, "We provide nursing rooms for our patrons who feel the need to use them. Please be assured that mothers are welcome to nurse their babies anywhere in our establishment without fear of being harassed by our employees. If this room needs attention, or if you are ever harassed anywhere in our store, please contact security immediately. Thank you."

Keep dreaming right?

I think you should definitely write them a letter. You could tell them that while you appreciate the fact that they are sensitive to the fact that some nursing mothers prefer a private place to nurse their children, that the room they provided needs improvement. Then go into the reasons why. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience.

Love this comment, my thoughts exactly!

You could also (especially?) emphasize that if a mom has to take her sad, screaming, distractable child home, she's not going to get much shopping or browsing done.
