how do you make a sign like this?

Example:

I get that it's a piece of painted wood, and the edges have been rubbed, but beyond that I'm pretty clueless. What kind of wood works best? How do you finish it? Do you apply a coat of natural color something prior to applying the colored paint? What do you use to rub the edges? (Sandpaper?)

I am very challenged in the hands-on craft-creating department so I seriously would just buy this, except that I want a very specific size to the piece and a specific word I don't think I'll find for sale. So I guess I have to make it myself.

TIA!

Try pine. A good acrylic paint will work just fine and with a little "sanding" on the edges you're good to go. Lettering can be done with Vinyl. Just peel and stick ( according to directions). You don't have to cover with anything else but if you want a glossy finish you can always do a light spray coat of clear poly BEFORE you put on the vinyl.
