How to get rid of ant piles?

We have HUGE ant piles in our front and backyards. Some of them even come inside because they're so close to the door. I can stop the ones coming inside by sprinkling cinnamon around the door...but what can I do about the big piles? I really don't want to use any chemicals. Any suggestions?

Well, it depends...boric acid works pretty well for bugs...not as toxic as conventional sprays...

addendum: We've also used BOILING water with decent results...doesn't always reach all the way down, but it generally does enough damage to convince them to move...
