Wood stain/sealant?

DH and I are making a picnic table for DD for her birthday. What's a good product to use to stain/seal/protect the wood? We will store it for the winter, but it will be outside all summer. Does it need something to protect from rain or sun damage? Thanks for any suggestions!

I'm planning to use AFM safecoats on wood for furniture for my boys. I'm nearly positive they have outdoor stuff too. Depending on the wood yes I think you need to seal it. What type of wood is it?
