Read archives, still confused about polio...

Hit me with information.

We have not vaccinated our son. However, the polio virus still confounds me.

Is polio something that found contaminated water? How long does it live? We drink our own well water. Could that be contaminated? We swim in lakes. Could the lakes be contaminated with viral shedding? Argh! Is this reported anywhere?

Has the CDC (or any mainstream media resource) reported that only 5% of those infected with the virus become paralyzed?

How long is the vaccine effective?

I am at peace with our decision not to vax regarding other vaccines... but, polio leaves me with many questions.

The US does not use OPV any longer. This was the polio vaccine that shed and could cause VAPP. This should no longer be a concern for you.

No one reports that only 5% of polio infections are paralytic because it's actually much less than that.

I believe you're confusing paralytic with symptomatic. Something like 90-95% of polio infections have no symptoms. 4-8% have symptoms and less than 1% of those with symptoms actually develop paralysis.

Here's the IPOL package insert (IPV inactivated polio vaccine currently in use in the US): http://www.vaccineshoppe.com/US_PDF/...2420_11.06.pdf

CDC info: http://www.cdc.gov/VACCINES/pubs/pin...oads/polio.pdf

This is discussed beginning on page 8.

I believe you are confusing some things here. The "polio" that FDR got from swimming in a contaminated lake was not due to the polio virus and would not be called Polio today. The water was most likely contaminated with pesticides.

Pesticide contaminated lakes cause paralysis and after the vaccine was on the market they retroactively counted all the polio victims (to point out how great the polio vaccine worked) which included ALL paralysis. There were many paralysis due to pesticide contamination.

They actually didn't know who had paralysis due to the polio virus or due to pesticide contamination because they didn't perform laboratory tests.

Only after the vaccine was on the market did they start to perform lab tests.

Plus they then changed the definition. They used names like Guillain-Barre Syndrome and others which pre-vax was counted as polio.

Get informed about polio and the vaccine. It is a very political story and will totally shock you. But you will also find out that it is not nearly what you had thought it to be.

And btw, I would not worry about your well water. The worry about chlorine and fluoride in city water is much more real.
