Paying Off Collections Accounts

I am trying to clean up my credit report. Is it best to pay the newest items to hit my credit report and leave the old stuff there?

I owe about $2300 from 2007 as the dates listed as hitting my report, which are medical bills, old utilities and cell phone bills that went to collections from moving and cancelling services.
I owe $950 from 2006 as the dates listed as hitting my report for a medical bill and an old cable bill that went to collections.
I owe $565 from 2005 as the dates listed as hitting my credit report for medical bills.
I owe $813 from 2004 from a cell phone bill that went to collections and was also turned over to an atty for a small claims court hearing in I think 2005. I did agree to make payments but due to changes in my relocation and lack of income have not paid.
I owe $232 from 2002 that is from a collection agency I don't who they are or what the charge is for.
In 2005 I also voluntarily surrendered a vehicle that I had a loan on and couldn't pay. The balance owed on that which is charged off is approx. $6500 showing on my report. The balance I owed when it was surrendered was approx. $10K. I bought the car new in 2001 for about 15K with an 18% interest rate.

Also, I contacted one of the newest agencies for a debt and they settled for 30% less than the total due. She said that my credit report would show that it was paid for less and closed out which isn't as good as paid in full.. how much difference does it make?

Head on over to creditboards.com

You may be able to get several of these off your credit report by offering a pay for delete.

If you are really serious about cleaning up your credit though, I highly recommend reading up at creditboards. I've gotten about 20 items deleted between my and dh's credit report just based on advise from there.

Newer collections are going to be tougher to deal with since they know they can still sue you. You will have better luck negotiating with older collections.

As far as what to pay - I would pay anyone willing to do a pay for delete first, then anyone I was worried was going to sue me, and then any other collections that were stubborn and weren't going away with regular disputing.

So when I contact the creditors I should request a delete from my credit report. Hmmm.. I don't know that was an option. I did read a little on creditboards and got more confused. It doesn't help that I've moved from one state to another and am really not sure which state I need to follow the rules and regulations for.

Where at all possible, you need to contact the original creditor and see if they'll recall the debt from the collection agency and work with you directly. The more debts you can get away from collection agencies, the better, because just having all of those accounts in collections is what is hurting your score - paying them off to the collection agency isn't going to help your score much at all, the only thing that fixes that is time. Collection accounts carry less weight the longer they've been on there.
