What works for your heartburn that's carb-free?

Ugh... I'm having KILLER heartburn, like there were tears in my eyes... and I'm having other problems right now that might be related to my blood sugar. It went up 25 points from one of my slippery elm lozenges that usually take care of the heartburn for me. (The other issues are muscle weakness, drowsiness in spite of a cup of coffee and a two-hour nap, general fogginess/malaise.)

What works for you? What's going on with me? This is the WORST time for it too, since DH has to work all evening (from home, but either it will be really easy or super-critical, and likely will oscillate between the two all evening, until midnight or later, so he can't take over parenting duties).

I don't know how you are with salt but a tsp of baking soda in a 1/2 cup of water ALWAYS works for me. No carbs there but there is alot of sodium of course.

I'll try that thanks. Teaspoon, 1/2 cup water. Does the water temp matter?

It definitely works a little better if the water is lukewarm to help dissolve the baking soda.

A shot of pickle juice.

Really!

The last two suggestions sound kinda similar ;-). Luv2skydive, do you chug it or put it in water? I've tried this at bedtime (2 Tbsp. ACV, usually in some water) to help with blood sugar, but it never did anything for my heartburn :-/.

It seems like the second lozenge I took did the job for now, but I'll try the baking soda next if it returns.

Chug and chase ACV! The lemon juice works better for me, though. I put it in my water all day too....just a tiny bit for flavor. : )

I do that a lot too. I harvest lemons in bulk (from the tree that hangs over our fence) and then freeze the juice in ice cube trays and 1/4 or 1/2 cup increments. I'll often toss a cube of lemon juice into a glass of water if I want something a bit different. I do love lemon, though... I eat them straight sometimes!

OK, so I had to go and see if my papaya was carb-free. It is! Well, less than 1 gram for 3 tablets. I swear by papaya for heartburn. It works great, and it's yummy. You can get it most anywhere- health food store for sure, but drug stores too. You mentioned drinking coffee- lately if I have any caffiene I get heartburn, although it didn't bother me before. Maybe it's effecting you too. Hope you find something that works!

not really active in the ddc, but due in april, too.... only thing working for me right now is chewing a few anise seeds at the onset of the heartburn...

i second the recommendation for papaya - i have been lucky enough to escape the heartburn this pregnancy for the most part, but i had it pretty bad with DS for a while and that helped a ton. it's best taken as a preventative, though, vs taking it after you've already got the heartburn. the other thing that helped keep the heartburn at bay was to not drink anything while i was eating. i would drink water before i ate, then wait at least 15 minutes after my meal and drink again. for some reason that helped a lot - can't remember where i read that tip but it was very helpful so thought i'd pass it along

Well, I had the coffee in the AM, then started having the really bad heartburn maybe eight hours later. So, I don't think so. Also, I have heartburn on days where I don't drink coffee also.

Is the papaya just a digestive enzyme thing? I have some enzyme tablets I take if I'm eating out and I suspect my food might have something in it I'm not supposed to eat... I might try taking those more regularly.
