Recently, we had gotten in touch with someone who had an almost brand new laptop for sale for $150. He had already told one guy that he would sell it to him, later in the week. Well, when that day came, the guy asked for even more time. The guy sold it to us instead.
I think that asking a seller to wait for a week is a risky proposition. He hasn't given you any money to hold it. A store would only hold it for 24 hours under those conditions. At a garage sale, they will usually only hold things if you have paid for it.
I understand the issue of him having your addy though. I used to deal with that on freecycle. It can be scary!
