I'm in love with this custom valance design

From an eBay seller:

But I need two of them, and then there's the cost of fabric and shipping, and man I can not spend $150 on valances. I'm trying to figure out if it's crazy to try to make them myself. I have a sewing machine and do the odd craft project here and there, or just mend things. In the first picture the pieces look stitched together kind of quilt style and that really intimidates me, but in the second it looks more like the larger panels were stitched into a large rectangle and the contrast panels were just stitched over top. Now that I could do. And I could line it, and put in the rod pocket.

I've had visions of making some kind of valances out of two particular fabrics, this pink/red/green here, and a white micro-dot on dark red like this, but I hadn't quite figured out how I wanted to put them together until seeing this eBay page. Really something like that red dot curtain, with contrast fabric on the rod pocket, would be so much easier! Why can't I want something easy?

This would be for our coming baby daughter's room. DH has been extremely concerned that the room not be too pink/princessy so I've been working on a color/design scheme that's bolder but still pretty and fun. The walls will be a light shade of granny smith apple green, and the accents will be red with white polka-dot, and shades of pink/green/red. Oh and I have some ideas for working birds into the design as well.

Thoughts?

I think with some careful measuring and maybe working with a paper pattern first, just to make sure you have the measurements right, you could do this. It's a fun valance!

this looks like fairly simple project. I agree square pannels and the triangular over pieces. I tought myself to sew, and can do this you can!! Go for it. Go to Walmart and find something in the 2 dollar bin and get it even cheeper.

Buy some muslin and try it with that first. It's a very pretty design for a valance. I like the two fabric idea as well. Have you seen Alexander Henry's Pink Bird Seed fabric? That might make a cool contrast fabric, or main fabric. I just ordered some from Sew Mama Sew.
