Ugh

Have you read the "Why Gender Matters" book? Some of it is very interesting, informative, study-backed type info HOWEVER on page 183 it talks about how dicipline needs to "start in the nursery" and you should only nurse a 4 month old for 15 minutes tops, put them in their crib and let themselves cry after that. It goes so far as to say "You are NOT a milk cow...let your baby cry and get on with your life." I had got the book from my library...so i actually ripped out the page and threw it away and then returned the book! My husband said "You lactivist you!" lol

Good for you for ripping the page out. It seems like that's the one exception to not destroying books.

The thought that moms are actually listening to that tidbit of info makes me sick.

:

I have to say you rock. I have never heard of that book but that is just garbage.

I hope they don't charge you for that.

What on earth was the book about, anyhow? O.o

What crap. When is the copyright? 20 years ago? please tell me it was at least 20 years ago. . . and that it's highly unlikely you'll find that in a bookstore so that unsuspecting new moms will be HORRIBLY, TERRIBLY misinformed. O.o

its a relatively new book...some of the info is really cool it's aimed at moms and teachers and the cool info is like how you can use different techniques in teaching based on gender (with backed up scientific fact..it's NOT like sterotypical stuff...) but yeah..newish book, BAD ADVICE regarding nursing though OBVIOUSLY!

What gross advice, my 2 yr. old wouldn't allow herself to be limited that way. FIFTEEN minutes then scream? Wow. :

I know and this advice is for a 4 month old?!!?! It's like, that is the babies ONLY nutrition and you want to limit it based on a "time frame" Every baby nurses differently some are slower than others AND even if it IS just for being close to mama/comfort...why is that a problem? He also says on that page "why nurse for longer than that when YOU can even FEEL that your breast is EMPTY." omg and this guy is an M.D. with no obvious understanding of a breastfeeding relationship!

That's horrible!

I've got news for him - unless she's waited a long time (4+ hours) to eat, my breasts never feel full or empty! Don't talk about the equipment if you don't have an operator's license, buddy!

So sad. It really disturbs me that people are willing to talk on and on about things in which they have no expertise, like they are speaking the God's honest truth. The perpetuation of breastfeeding myths is astounding. Don't just repeat something because you heard/read it somewhere!!!!

Als0 - My breast stopped feeling full between feedings crazy early after DD2's birth. That's supply and demand, I guess (supplying two demanding kiddos, ).

Unbelievable. Good for you for ripping out that page.

It kills me that this stuff is so frequently written by men, I have even thought that with a lot of Dr. Sears' work. I imagine them sitting in their recliner wearing a man-robe and smoking a pipe and yelling "Martha can you quiet that baby down, I am trying to work here!".

What a UA violation. :

Several of my colleagues read this book for a book study last year. We teach middle school. Anyway, I was too busy pumping at every break, so I didn't join in. I got a copy of the book and heard lots of the discussion. I'll have to dig it out and read it now. Too bad I wasn't part of the group last year. I would have had some first-hand commentary during that chapter!

Good for you! Glad you 'altered' that book.
Umm...am I missing something here? That wasn't your book. It doesn't matter that you/we disagree with that page. Do you routinely go around destroying library books you disagree with? Leave a post it note on the page next time if you really want to warn a reader about the misinformation.

I would seriously question anything that author has to say after a remark like that.

Shoulda trashed the whole book.

: I'm not seeing how vandalism and censorship can be construed as lactivism.

That advice makes me sad. Heck, I like to eat for more than fifteen minutes sometimes and I'm in my thirties!
