homebirth in the mainstream media

Hey everyone;

I'm a journalist (as well as a homebirth... advocate? enthusiast?) and I'm trying to collect examples of planned homebirths in the mainstream media for an article I'm writing.

I remember Sookie on "Gilmore Girls" had at least one, as well as one of the characters on "The L Word" -- can you think of any others? I know there must be more than that.

Thanks for the help --

Kristen

I don't know if this is what you're looking for but there's the documentary by Ricki Lake - The Business of Being Born.

There was a definite homebirth on one of discovery channel's (or maybe national geographic?) shows on the human life cycle, but it wasn't mentioned as such. Took me by surprise, though

I know TLC has homebirths every once and a while on their Baby Stories show... not great depictions of homebirth every time, but sometimes quite nice.

this is embarressing, but i remember when there was a home birth on 'chasing amy' (i think that's what it is called??? the woman lawyer show and her mom worked for dcfs??)

amy's law clerk had a home birth at amy's house.

Wasn't there one on Dhrama and Greg or was that portrayed badly?

I think Shelly on the old Northern Exposure had her baby at home on the show... I think she had one in real life as well

I think that in both those cases though they didn't go well. I think I remember hearing that on Gilmore Girls Luke's kooky sister had a homebirth and named her baby Doula

Yup, it was Judging Amy. The clerk had a water birth in her boss's living room! LOL.

There was one on Charmed, but I don't think that show is meant to be realistic at all... and besides, they're witches! Who knows, maybe they gave her a magical "witch epidural" lol!

Why is it embarrassing? Should I be embarrassed because you beat me to it?

"Are We Done Yet", Nia Long has a homebirth. Twins, no less! With a male midwife (played by John C. McGinley, who's wife IRL is a doula and had a homebirth).

These are all great -- keep 'em coming.

Have any of you actually seen 'The Business of Being Born'? I haven't yet, but I was under the impression that's it's about birth in general and not specifically about home birth (although it is featured as an alternative, and, I think, has Ricki Lake talking about it).

Thanks!

That was the first one I thought of as well
I think it was called Judge Amy but not positive. Chasing Amy is a movie with the Clerks guys and Ben Aflick.

ETA: It was called Judging Amy

I saw it. HB is the main method of birthing that is featured in the film.

Does it need to be real people? The comic strip "For Better for Worse" had an unplanned homebirth, and "Stone Soup" had a planned homebirth.

In Gilmore Girls, Sookie's first birth was a HB. It didn't go into any details about the birth. Sookie and her husband, Jackson, were really excited about it but Lorelai was all "That's what a hospital is FOR!" However, I think the portrayal of the midwife was very poor--she was very police-like about it all, "What are YOU doing to help the baby?" and "She is not pro-hb, I can tell."

Sookie's second birth was a hospital birth.

I haven't seen season 7 yet, so I can't comment on Liz's birth.

Can you tell DH and I are in the midst of a Gilmore Girls marathon? LOL.

In the newer "Little Women" though, Meg has her twins at home. I don't know if that's relevant though, since homebirths were the absolute norm during the Civil War era, LOL.

Do you mean like celebs birthing at home?

Dr. Cox from Scrubs - his wife is a doula and had a home birth (planned) a few months back. Tia Carerra is one. Cindy Crawford had hers at home. Noah Wiley and his wife had a natural childbirth using HypnoBirthing but I don't know for sure that they were at home... Somewhere there is a thread on this...
