Tankless water heaters?

We're considering getting one of these. We live in FL, so freezing isn't an issue and I want it outside my home for space issues (we are 6 people living in 1100 sq ft.). We also would like it to run on natural gas.

Does anyone have this set up? Any thoughts or comments?

I'm curious too. I think they are pretty common in part of Europe (family in the Netherlands have them).

Here's an article from Mother Earth News that has some good info.

Great! That's a lot of help. I also found a $525 rebate from my gas company for changing out my water heater for a tankless!! That almost pays for the water heater.

We've had an electric one for about a year now, and I have no complaints.

We have a tankless that is outside and I love it. Water heats up fast and there's no problem running hot water in two areas (taking a shower while the dishwasher is running). The temp control is in the laundry room and easy to use.

How much do these cost? My dh has been talking about them lately!

They run between $600 and $6000.

I like the $600 ones.

couldn't find anything on Consumer Reports about them.

I've been thinking about getting one as well.

We had one that ran off of propane. Ours cost about $800 with the power vent and DH installed it himself. It was great for company, as we would host 8 people overnight. I loved it until the cost of propane made it more expensive than an electric tank. We only used propane for the water heater and the dryer, so our cost was higher than those who use gas for heat and cooking.

We're having someone out this week to give us a price estimate. With the tax savings and the rebate from the gas company, it looks like it will pay for itself. Interesting! The super cool thing is that with the tank out of our house, we'll be able to have a little playroom in the center of our home! How fun!

DH has wanted a tankless water heater since we moved into this house 2 years ago. I wish I could find a rebate for $525 we would already own one!
But this thread did give me the determination to go looking for some rebate!
Thanks!

Our rebate is given by our gas company, listed on their website. When I called on it, she was very nice and said all they needed was the copy of the receipt, and a form filled out, and we'd have the check in 6-8 weeks! It's really simple!

UGH.
I have scoured our gas companies web site but I see nothing about rebates for tankless water heaters.
Though I did find an option for signing up for renewable energy! They didn't have the option available when I first moved here (I called and asked!).
I am going to keep looking though.
