First time mothers...now that I've been a mom for a week and am an expert,
here is some advice. Maybe you're not as panicked as I was, but if you're waiting for your milk to come in, and don't think it will...it WILL. Emmett was hungry and cried hysterically for the first 3 days. I felt horrible. My breasts hadn't enlarged more than a half size during pregnancy, and my nipples hadn't changed shape much, two signs that I kept reading were a good way to tell that milk production would work out. So I was worried. He was so upset, and the crying was drying out his mouth.
On day 4 I woke up to very engorged breasts. There is enough milk for a litter of puppies plus my baby! It's more than he can eat, which is sort of painful for me, but it is such a relief. I'm drinking a lot of water, which I think helps.
When he was looking like his mouth was dry during those first horrible days, I dipped a clean finger into water and let him suck on it, so he got several drops of water this way. Then we just dealt with the crying as best we could, and I fed him colostrum pretty much constantly, hoping he was getting the nutrition he needed. It was heartbreaking, but in retrospect, I'm glad we didn't resort to formula supplementation.
Basically, if you're set on no-formula, and you're at this stage in the first couple days and worried, you'll get through it and all will be okay!
