Apparently baby dropping, cramps, runny buns and bloody show are all signs that labor is imminent and cannot be ignored. I wasn't feeling ready, but baby was...
We went to the hotel to get out of the house for privacy reasons. It was just dh, dd and me. Checked in at 4 in the afternoon, and pretty soon my labor got intense. I dealt with it as best I could while dh played with dd in the room and kept her from climbing on me. The labor was a lot like dd's, except without the stalls (dd was hospital birth). I got all the towels and pads ready before I couldn't deal with it, and then just let myself get into labor. I could feel myself not wanting to get to complete, knowing how intense it gets, but I told myself to just go there and it would be over soon. I ended up on hands and knees, my water broke, and within another contraction my body started to bear down. It was rough and fast, I kept my hand down there so I could feel the baby crowning. I was simultaneously thinking "this is crazy" and "this is so awesome, I'm birthing my baby all by myself!" The amniotic fluid was bloody but clear of meconium. I wasn't sure if the blood was a bad sign or not (my PP midwife later told me it was totally normal), so I was a little worried, but the head crowned just then. Dh and dd watched as the body slid out next, and I turned him over in my arms. We had a boy! And he breathed and wiggled right away.
I'd known my placenta was low so I waited for it to birth. It took a long time. At midnight I called my midwife support, a woman who had acted as doula for the birth of my dd. She offered to come over right away and do a quick check and newborn exam, which was so awesome of her. By the time she got there she said it had detached but it wasn't coming out with gentle traction so we left it. After she left I went to the bathroom yet again and it finally came out on its own.
Dh and dd and new little ds settled down to sleep. I couldn't sleep much but we tandem nursed and everything is going really well. We packed up this morning and came home. I feel really great, my family is relieved that everything went well. I have to get dh to get a pic up soon so I will update when it is ready.
It was an awesome birth!
