Is there a chemical sunscreen that isn't so bad for you...

or is that an impossibility?
I love my UV naturals, but I just can't put it on every morning like I used to with my daily sunscreens with an spf. I also don't want to put it on my son when he goes to preschool just for time outside b/c it is heavier.

I've been checking out the ewg website, but am wondering if anyone has any organic brands they like that go on light or if they are marginally safer.

tia.

This is one that was recommeded by Dr. Mercola at mercola.com. It also has a low rating (which is good) on the Skin Deep website at ewg.org.

thats exactly what i was going to recommend. we used it just last month on our 2 week trip to FL, and our pastey white NW bodies didnt burn a bit!

The aubrey ones leave my skin sooooo white and it does not rub in.

I was in a HFS yesterday and saw a new sunscreen with the active ingredient zinc oxide instead of titanium dioxide. It looks so super clean and runs into your skin beautifully! I wish I could remember the name. It is a green box and of course, it costs twice as much as all the other products.

Isn't zinc oxide just cheap/plain diaper rash cream?
Zinc oxide is in many diaper rash creams, but in many sunscreens they micronize it so that it appears less white on the skin.

I love this one, though chemical-free...

Just wondering if you thought of the name of this sunscreen? I've tried them all (we live in Hawaii) and I really don't like any of them. They're all too thick and pasty (hard to apply, especially with wiggly little ones) and UV Naturals is too oily and messy (ick) even though it says non-greasy.

I need something new!

I use the Badger SPF 30 Sunscreen, It is a little thick but i like it.

I would cross reference the EWG site with the reviews on www.makeupalley.com.
I have not had good luck finding a sunscreen that has a low EWG number, was broad spectrum and stable, and doesn't give me break outs. I decided that I would go with what worked and didn't break me out in this case, and forget about the EWG rating on this issue for me.
For my son, we use the California Baby sunscreen, but I use Peter Thomas Roth or Neutrogena sunscreen on myself.

I want to know too! I just ordered some Kiss My FAce stuff for daily use, though I know it's not that great according to the ewg site. I might try avalon organics moisturizer with spf too. I just haven't found a mineral one that is not heavy. UV natural dries after a while, but is still a bit greasy imo, and I find Calif. baby really white. FWIW Badger is my favorite among mineral sunscreens, but I still find it a tad heavy.

thanks for the makeup alley link.

bumping this because I'm still struggling with sunscreens. Anyone have anything new to add?

I'm also looking. Badger and UV naturals have left my 11 month old with a suntan. his arms are brown and it's white in his fat rolls. And we are NOT out in the sun that much or just sitting at the park in peak hours. I use a hat which kept his face covered, but the forearms and ankles of all my kids are pretty tan.

Next summer I'm going back to chemical sunscreens I think, at least sometimes.

SafeMama recommends a brand called TruKids that I'd never heard of. It's a mineral sunscreen, but she says it goes on easily. I'm going to check it out.

We normally use the California Baby SPF 30 on the kids. It's pretty thick, and stays a bit white on the skin. But *knock on wood*, none of my kids have gotten a sunburn this year. If we only going to be outside for a bit, and for myself, I use the California Baby Everyday Lotion with SPF 18. It blends into the skin much better.

In a pinch, I bought Avalon Organics Vitamin C Moisture plus Lotion SPF 15 at Target, (for myself). It rubs in completely and worked really well. But it rates a 6 at Skin Deep. Gah. It smells yummy too! Oh well. I guess I'll finish this bottle and probably not buy it again.

I just realized that this was the thread that I started, lol. Anyway, I used that exact one this summer for myself, just for my face. I have Kiss my face cell mate and the avalon organics moist. with spf15. My face isn't as tan as last summer, but I've been breaking out a bit.

The real issue is the body. I did get some alba botanica spf for kids and a regular. It is very light. It appeared to work a little better, but not as great as the pink water babies stuff used to for us. We ran out of it pretty quickly and then i went back to badger and uv naturals, which I'm even less happy with.

I bought some Ocean Potion Face spf45 that's supposed to be all natural and water resistant. We have yet to actually try it though. My kids and I usually tan well so it's not like we have to have sunscreen. I've noticed if I put some salve I have on them when they come in with a little redness, that it helps the body heal those areas and haven't had peeling either.

Grrr. I've been so frustrated/upset about sunblocks this summer. I bought two different ones before we went to Florida: Neutrogena 70 (recommended by my dermatologist) and No-Ad 45 (recommended by Consumer Reports.) Neither of them worked. I have Native American blood and olive skin, yet even totally slathered with these sunblocks, I was burned in less than an hour. Yes, we were out in the middle of the day, but um, when I only get to the beach once every couple of years, I'm going to take advantage. I wound up cowering under an umbrella most of the rest of the vaca. :

What makes me the maddest is that I thought it was a trade-off. We use sunblock with scary chemicals (that ruined the finish on DH's car where my knee rested,) but we don't get sunburned. But clearly, even the sunblocks with scary chemicals didn't work, so how are we supposed to protect ourselves during our summer fun?

And if you can bear to listen to yet more ranting . . . I don't remember it being like this when I was a kid, do you? I was outside all day, every day when I was a kid, and the highest SPF sunblock available was 4 or 8. I only burned twice the whole time I was growing up, when I was out for 10-12 hours in the bearing-down sun. Why can't I stay out more than a few minutes now? Does it have something to do with climate change? I can't think of any other explanations. Can you tell it's really been bugging me?

I had no ad a couple years ago and I thought I remember it working.Yeah I'm assuming the sun is stronger. I used to apply sunscreen 8 very rarely and I almost never got burned. I think covering up more is key for us, (I need to wear a hat) but it's not like I'm gonna make them wear long sleeves! I think we also need to put it on every day like we used to. I know it's kind of overload, but better than skin damage if you ask me.

i really like sierra madre sun cream (spf 30) made by the super salve company. i order it online, it's a great deal (esp if you order 3-- minimizes shipping); i understand all the ingredients (all natural, wholesome things); it goes on beautifully like something i'd want on my skin and *doesn't make me look white(r)/purple*; and it has a lovely mild smell. it's protected me pretty well but i did notice this summer when we were at the beach i think i should have reapplied after a couple hours.
