Recess

How many recesses does your school have? Our school has only one recess a day. The kids don't even get a recess during the lunch hour. they don't even get to go outside.

I asked the school about it, and they replied that they have too much to teach. I think it is pretty ridiculous.

Except for Wed they have 3 + before school.

School starts at 9:50. Some kids are there by 8. All kids are expected to go outside to play after they get there

10:15 -10:30, recess outside

11:45-12:15 they're inside eating, though most of them are dismissed at 12:10.

12:15-12:40 they're outside playing.

2-2:15 is last recess outside.

Wednesdays is early dismissal day so they have everything except the 2pm recess

dumping rain & temps colder than either -13F(-25C) or -4F(-20C) they have indoor recess.

During the winter months each grade has a Noon Games day where they're in the gym.

There is a Walking Club at noon & currently there is a Running Club for those who wish to join from Grades 3-6.

My kids have one 30 minute recess and one 30 minute gym class each day. Recess is outside most days. Inside recess occurs if it is raining or the temperature is below 10F.

They also come home and play outside every day after school

When I was a kid we only had one recess each day, so this seems normal to me.

Before school, up to 45 minutes.

Grade recess, 30-45 min.

All-school recess, 1 hour.

After school kids are outside.

This is all in case it is very cold or raining.

Mine are outside most of the afternoon and evening as well. And alllll summer long.

We only had one recess in school, too. At one school, we couldn't even go out at all, and instead sat inside for a snack, which was mostly Twinkies. Wonder the ranking of obesity in that county?

Three plus the before school starts play.
Then in 4th grade it drops to two.

Three (AM, Lunch and PM) and they typically play for 10-15 minutes before school and a lot of kids stay after school to play too (it's a neighborhood school and lots of people walk). My daughter is in full day K and they don't do PE/Gym yet ... maybe they lose a recess when that starts -- not sure. Our school is extremely academic, but they seem to do a good job of making sure there's time for exercise. They also have a healthy group snack in all grades (K-6) -- parents donate the snacks -- every day which I like.

Lol, I had to ask my daughter; I thought they had two recesses during school, but she tells me that they have three most of the time. I have their classroom schedule somewhere in their school files but I didn't want to dig through and find it.

My kids aren't in school yet (we're currently homeschooling) but the school they'll be attending in September has a 15 minute recess in the morning, 30 minute recess at lunch and a 15 minute recess in the afternoon.

DD's school has the same as most of the above--3 recesses, plus a really good amount of time to eat snacks and lunch. Frankly this is as important to me. And, the gym classes are great--lots of outdoor activities, and incredibly fun indoor games. I didn't have it so good as a child!

15 minutes in the am. Lunchtime and recess= 1 hour. I wish there was one more in the afternoon but they do have a "special" then(music, p.e.,dance, or art).

My son's school is 8:35 to 3 pm. They have a 20 minute recess or so in the am, plus they have 25 minutes for lunch and a 25 minute recess right after lunch. They always go outside except in extreme weather (below -25 celcius or pouring rain)

Kids need to get fresh air and a break from their books. My DS is in kindy, but his whole elementary school have the same breaks, plus the kindy kids sometimes get some extra time outside when their teacher thinks they need it!

15 minutes in the morning.

About a half hour at lunch, after eating.

15 minutes in the afternoon.

Out of each 5 day cycle, they have 3 days with a 40 minute gym class. The other 2 days they have a 20 minute "daily physical activity" with the classroom teacher - they may dance, walk, do exercises, or just go out to recess 20 minutes early and tear around.

Zero nothing none

I teach kinder and recess is not allowed in any grades.

40 min only at our school. YUCK!!!

Our kids are supposed to get one recess a day, which would be fine by me. It's what I had in school a hundred years ago. They get gym four times a week.

The recess problem is that my daughter (5th grade) almost never gets her "daily" recess. She's in a pull-out learning enrichment program ("gifted and talented program"), and she takes violin, which is also a pull-out. So, the school makes her make up the missed classwork during recess.

My daughters have 1 recess, around 20 min. either before or after lunch. There is NOT any playing before school, but school starts at 7:50. They can be dropped off starting at 7:30--ours take the bus. They also have PE 3x per week. Music 2x, Spanish 2x, art 2x, "free thinking" once every other week.

3. Morning, lunch and afternoon. And PE 2-3 times per week. My child would go absolutely insane if he didn't have all those breaks. He's a mover and needs to burn off some energy.

My elementary school aged DS gets two actual "recess" periods -- one for 30 min. in the morning, one for 30 min. after eating lunch. But they also have an hour of sports in the afternoon, which I think counts. But its a private school and one of the reasons I like it is that they do that much recess and sports class, while the public schools in the area don't.

My preschool-aged DD plays outside between arrive in the morning and 9 (she gets there at 7:30, kids come in up until 9), a 15-20 minute morning recess. Full-day kids play outside from 3:30 until 5, or whenever they get picked up.

I'm curious where everyone lives, and if your children attend public school or private school.

One of the reasons I homeschool is that my children were not even going to get the half hour recess daily, and 2 45-minute gym periods a week that I got as a child, AND the school day was longer.

Charter. The public goes 30 min.
