Alberta, Canada though our Education is run through Saskatchewan instead of Alberta so it's all SK based.

It's public school. In Saskatchewan there is a huge push for active kids.

In addition to what I stated above, the classes have gym 5 days a week for about 15-20minutes.

15 minutes in the afternoon.

Out of each 5 day cycle, they have 3 days with a 40 minute gym class. The other 2 days they have a 20 minute "daily physical activity" with the classroom teacher - they may dance, walk, do exercises, or just go out to recess 20 minutes early and tear around.

One of the reasons I homeschool is that my children were not even going to get the half hour recess daily, and 2 45-minute gym periods a week that I got as a child, AND the school day was longer.
Canada. Public. School day is 9 to 3:30.

Well, ours has 1 per day (right before lunch) and it's outside unless it's too cold or rainy. Then there is Health and Wellness, which takes place I believe 3 or 4 days out of the week, which is essentially another 'recess' break. Then on Mondays they have PE.

For our school, (ours go to a Charter School) I would actually agree that there is 'too much to teach' to be having several recess breaks per day. (mind you, this does NOT mean that the kids just sit at their desks ALLLLLLL DAAAAAAY LOOOONG, just because there is only one 'recess' per day. )

Oh....and when we used to homeschool, we had 'recess' written in our schedule daily, however we only ever got around to doing it MAYBE once per week. So they are getting more outside time at school than they were when we homeschooled, but that's just us.

We live in Oregon.

Our ds gets 2-3 (depending on how you count it). Starting in 3rd grade, they don't get any afternoon recess, just the lunchtime one. But EVERYONE gets lunchtime recess (and it's a good 30 minutes). If they ever threaten to cut out lunch time recess I will raise a major stink.

Playtime before school
Recess after lunch
Recess in the afternoon

Plus 2 days a week they have PE in the AM after reading.

I wish there was one more in the afternoon but they do have a "special" then(music, p.e.,dance, or art).
Same here. Right after lunch, they have "specials", so that's another "break" that is not 'recess' but is constructive and fun)

dumping rain & temps colder than either -13F(-25C) or -4F(-20C) they have indoor recess.
LOL!

Around here (Florida) somewhere in the lower-50s is considered "too cold to go outside and play"

15 minute recesses 4x a day, plus PE. And I love our teacher-he takes them outside to play soccer, run and jump rope a lot.

My kindergarteners have 1 long lunch recess of about 25 minutes. Whenever possible, usually about 3-4 days a week, we have another 20 minute recess.

Our son goes to kindergarten at a public charter school in California. He has an hour of indoor free play in the morning, an hour outdoor recess and then lunch. He loves his school - who wouldn't??

My 8th grader attends an independant school that offers preschool to 8th grade. The 7- 8th graders get one morning outside break of 20 minutes and they take any snacks they've brought out with them. Then they get about an hour for lunch and outside. They can bring their food outside if they wish. ETA- I know the 8th graders get a down time in the afternoon. I can't remember if they go out. I'll ask, but I know sometimes my ds has packed an afternoon snack. Maybe he eats that at his desk or something?

The preschoolers and K are outside a lot. I often see the preschool out pretty much all morning doing various activites outside, including art etc

I am pretty sure the rest of the school get a half hour morning/snack break and then about a hour lunch/outside break. They older kids also have PE everyday. I feel pretty comfortable with the amount of physical activity and outdoor time available.
