On Dr. Phil today...

The first part of the show they were talking about breast implants. They had on a panel of doctors. One of the female doctors said what about the original function of breasts to nurture and to feed a baby...she pointed out that these are not men's playthings.

Then she said that as society if a woman is nursing a baby we ask her to go to the bathroom, but if a woman comes in with DDDDDDDDD implants spilling out of her shirt we ooh and aah and treat her as a queen.

Then one of the male docs said someone ask his wife to go nurse their baby in a bathroom and he told that person to take their dinner into the bathroom.

I was helping my daughter with homeschool while it was on so I'm paraphrasing here and I don't know the names of all the docs, but it was good. It was only the first 10 min. of the show.

Wow, really? Dr Phil is usually really annoyingly ignorant about BFing. I might actually have to watch today!

Did Dr. Phil say anything? Robin formula fed their kids and he's usually dumb when it comes to breastfeeding.

Again towards the end of the show a mom asked a question about her baby. Can't remember how old the baby was 7 or 8 mos., I think. She asked how long she should breastfeed.

Dr. Sears was one of the docs on the panel and he said AT LEAST a year. Dr. Phil mentioned that AAP recs 1 year and WHO recs 2 years. Dr. Phil said he had a mom on the show awhile back who was bf'ing her 5 & 7 year olds and he thought that was too long. Now he says that once the kid is coming home and throwing the keys on the nightstand and telling mom he wants a snack, it's probably time to wean.

Dr. Sears said that when it's socially awkward (5ish) that it's time to wean.

Oh, look at the ages of he and Robin's kids - I think FF was the norm...that was probably right about the time BF'ing was making a "comeback" so to speak.

Yeah I think formula use peaked in the 70s.

I was born in 81. My mom was swayed by the medical campaign to BF (for 18 mnths, go mom), but she was the only breastfeeder she knew other than her LLL.

I was born in 81 as well, and my mom was informed by her docs to stop BF at 6 weeks and put me on formula with iron, because her milk did not contain enough iron. : (thats all in my baby book.)

I was born in the 70's and my mama FF me...however, when she had my brothers in the 80's (one in 81), she found she had remarried to a lactivist LOL! She BF'd both boys (stepdad was very insistant upon it ).

I agree though, that the views propagated possibly made the difference for her.

another 81 baby here. my mum BF me for 3 month but lost her milk due to her throwing up a lot after i was born (plus she had really bad PPD) after that i was FF and the same thing happened with my 1/2 bro and sis.
with my sister she was told by a MW to "make sure you have all your bottles and steriliser ready by time she si 3 months old so you can switch her over" i was like eh? when she told me.
i feb DS1 for 12 weeks
DD 1 for 10 DS2 for 14 months and DD2 is still going strong at almost 7 months,

I was a '79 baby, and breast fed. However, my sister was born in '70 and my mom was talked out of bfing by my dad and my grandmother. When my brother was born ('81) he was a preemie and the dr. told my mom NOT to bf...that he needed the formula!!!

So I was the only lucky one to breastfeed!

oh, btw, my dad is a HUGE lactivist now... He knows whats best for his grandbabies!!

I think Dr. Sears is close, but not for the right reason. When other species loose their "milk teeth," they wean. It's not about "social awkwardness" : but about the physiological readiness to wean when the first tooth is lost.

I just read the transcipt from the Dr Phil show. That was interesting. I was born in 77 and my brother in 75 and we were both ff but that is b/c we were born right around Christmas and my mom was going out and her grandma died two weeks after I was born. She did bf us for two weeks but she was running around too much. But with my young brother born in 81 she didn't leave the house for a mth after he was born and she bf him. Though I have never asked her how long. She said though if she had more info back then she would of bf us all. She just didn't have the help that we do now. My Grandma died two weeks after my dd was born and that didn't stop me from bfing. I think it was just the time and " thing to do " then.

Dr. Phil's thoughts on BFing are usually annoying at best, but he's still hot.

Okay girlfriend - you just made my jaw hit the floor - and not in a good way! We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one!

Well, okay, we agree on the first part of your statement anyway! His thoughts on most things are usually annoying at best!

Well, said in best Dr. Phil voice: "I'm not for everyone, and I never ask people to substitute my judgement for their own."

I was glad he said the thing about throwing their keys on the nightstand instead of the usual "when a kid is running up to you asking for milk or pulling up your shirt" crapola. Because keys on the nightstand indicates at least 16 where as the other implies age 1 or 2!

I just rewatched this part of the show. the doctor who said that his wife was told to go to the bathroom was one of the Dr. Sears'! Wrong guy to mess with I think
