I've spent the last 2 hours repurposing my plastic bags

by turning them into plarn - plastic yarn.

I think I'm done for the day. This feels a little like spinning your own yarn. It's really time intensive - but I feel good finding another use for plastic bags that we have other than throwing them in the trash or hoping that the get recycled properly.

We've been using canvas bags now for some time, but still had this huge stash of plastic, and now I've started raiding the plastic bag recycle bins at the grocery store for more Plarn.

I'd make more stuff with plarn if i could find a willing victim to MAKE the plarn. The first time, I felt good about it. Now, I know i just can't do it FAST enough!

Plarn?!?!

I would like to begin by saying, I LOVE THIS FORUM. The new divisions and whatnot are super-cool.

Second, HOW DO YOU MAKE PLARN?!?! Because I have a stash leftover from before cloth bags (and from rude baggers who put plastic bags INSIDE of cloth ones and I would love to feel recycle-savvy.

A Plarn spinner here, too. This was my New Year's Resolution, and so far so good. Now, once I'm done "spinning" I can start knitting with Plarn.

My Aunty J made me the coolest plarn bag a couple of years ago. BFF and I toyed with the idea of making a few to sell at the food coop (her DH manages it), but once we tackled making plarn we realized it was going to take a loooong time to make just one! Wish I had the patience...maybe just one...

I'm really excited to try this! I saw it online once and was so impressed but forgot to seek out instructions until coming across this thread so thank you, OP!

I'll "spin" the plarn while sitting in front of the telly at night but it's the actual knitting that has me anxious. Is it difficult to work with? I would think the needle would catch/pull/tear the plarn....?

I think it takes 75 bags to make one grocery sized bag...I just keep repeating I have the patience...I have the patience!

Anyone have any hints for centering the loops right? I end up with the loop that I'm looping into being uneven alot. Did that make sense?

I've crocheted two plarn shopping bags now.

I kept getting the loops uneven, too. Then I tried crocheting to near the end of the current loop. And then when there is just a few inches left (like 3-4), THEN I add the next loop.

Glad I'm not the only one!! I'll have to try that...I can see where it might work better!

Thanks
