MagKnits is gone!

Thread Starter
I know there are some issues with the owners of MagKnits; but, I am very sad to see the site gone.

yeah, theres some mega drama going on the ravelry forums

Makes me sad that all the patterns were snatched down so quickly with no warning or time for people to copy the ones they wanted to make.

I know swing thing was on my list, and I even have the yarn for it

Well that's a bummer. I didn't know.
Swing thing may not be such a problem, I'm assuming Theresa will republish the pattern through LTK. It's also cached- google it, and under the name in the list of results click cache. In a lot of ways, I'm glad that the situation with Hipknits/ Magknits has come to a head- whilst Kerrie no longer owes me money, our business dealings over the years have left a nasty taste in my mouth. I think she's handling it remarkably well, though.

I will defintiely be republishing Swing Thing on LTK, it'll just take me a bit to reformat it in my style to match the rest of the patterns. I missed all the threads on rav about it, which is probably best because I wouldn't really have had anything nice to say, either. I was never paid for Swing Thing, even after many emails (some with replies from Kerrie, some ignored). So this non-payment to designers isn't new, Swing Thing was published back in Jan of 2006!

oooh! check on ravelry, you may still be able to get payment by pm-ing her there. That is just awful that you weren't paid Theresa.

I was half way through making the Blossom wrap dress on magknits, and stupidly hadn't printed it, just bookmarked the site, and had the laptop beside me while knitting. I think I almost had a heart attack last night when it didn't show up! My DH just laughed and laughed. I didn't think it was so funny, myself. Thankfully at Ravelry one of the threads showed me how to pull up the cache of it so I can finish making the dress.

I never ordered yarn from them- but wanted to- so glad I didn't after the rav drama. That kind of talk shouldn't probably have gone on as long as it did though- it seems to be the latest thing over there... scam this scam that. But business owners really need to step up and pay or send out orders. There is no excuse for that kind of shoddy business.

Does anyone know how to do the cache to see if Skirtsicle can be found? I just cast that on for my daughter, and really want to finish it quickly so I can finish the last of the baby's knits before she arrives. ack. this stinks.

I'm pretty impressed with the way Casey and Jess handled it- that rather than having HK obliquely referenced in many, many threads as an elephant in the corner, they just let one individual blow it open and tell their stories. I was planning on setting aside a small amount of money to buy something from HK at wonderwool as a show of support : If she's genuine about getting back on her feet and sorting her life out, good on her.
In the meantime, there's always posh yarn. Dee originally started HipKnits before she sold to Kerrie, and their colourways are beautiful, with some real depth to them- especially on the cashmere.

Oh boy! I don't go into the forums over at ravelry but after seeing this headed over to read. Man I have like 5 new tabs opened for various threads. I'm going to be reading for ages.

Sad to see it go though. There are many patterns I liked on there.

I totally missed it! Anyone wanna spread a little drama here so I know whats going on?! Ok, no name calling guys But I'd really like a short overview!

Brandi - someone summed everything up nicely in a blog post, I'll see if I can dig up a link. The babe has been very fussy for the past 24 hours so I've read several threads on the whole thing (all 14 pages on both of them).

And Theresa - I can't beleive that you never got paid for Swing Thing! I've only submitted once to Knitty - I never followed up on with a MagKnits submission because the submission guidelines seemed so fussy.

In a nutshell, Brandi, Kerrie of Hipknits, Magknits and Yarn Forward has persistent problems with her outgoing post and missing parcels (I'm aware of a dozen people with similar experiences to my own, there's probably more), BT internet and complaints not reaching her, and has forgotten to pay at least 2 Magknits designers. Now with Ravelry, all the knitters and designers are talking to each other and consequently the extent of the problem is widely known :
FWIW, I truly do believe that there's been at least one missing parcel, but these things seem to come in cycles.

The hoodie baby blanket originally on magknits can be found at: http://thriftyknitter.com/?p=293 (craftzine blog posted this today)

I'm having trouble finding the cached page for swing thing. Anyone have this handY? Thanks
post #19 of 20
No, but if you PM knittingintheshade (further up this thread) she ought to be able to help- it's her design.
