sewing the cervix shut?

a man came in to work today and mentioned that his pregnant wife had had it done today. i have never heard of that. why on earth?????

It's called a cerclage. It is used to prevent certain types of pre-term labor. It is removed after a certain point in pregnancy (usually 37 weeks) so that the mother can go into labor naturally.

Cerclage is used in cases of known or suspected incompetent cervix.

Friend of mine had it done when she got pregnant less than 6 months after gastric bypass and routinely had to choose between eating caloric foods and water during the day and was hospitalized often for dehydration which kept causing contractions and dilation waaaaaaay too early. She had a series of them, actually, as her cervix changed.
