whey protein

Not for me...but my DH is weightlifting and wants to supplement with a whey protein...any ideas on a good one? I know Mercola sells one, but thought I would get your knowledgeable opinions first

From what I know, whey protein is problematic in the same way that pasteurizing dairy is problematic. The drying process does weird things to the proteins. If I were more awake, I'd express myself better I swear!

Can you DH eat some hard boiled eggs instead? Or some other protein source?

Oh he can, he is just jumping on this "whey protein bandwagon" because of who he is working out with. Since it is nearly impossible to change his mind, I thought I would try to find the best of what is out there. The way it is broken down is the reason I stopped taking it myself. He does get plenty of meat and raw dairy and eggs. Just his latest fad, I guess

I got some single serving shakes to try from WF made by BioChem - a chocolate and a vanilla one. They both were pretty good for whey protein shakes. You can buy a big container of the stuff there too. I just wanted to try it first though. Its sweetened with stevia. All of the brands at GNC are sweetened with artificial sweetners or contain soy. I have since heard that hemp protein may be better health-wise than whey protein. WF has the hemp as well but I haven't tried it yet. I need a quick way to get my protein some days when I haven't eaten enough (pregnant full-time working mom here that gets tired of eating eggs all the time ).

nak-
I low carb for PCOS. My fav protein shake is 3 raw eggs, some cream, vanilla stevia and a little xylitol (an "egg cream"). Coconut oil can be added too. Sprinkle w/ nutmeg for an eggnog flavor. Skip the nutmeg and blend w/ frozen strawberries (yum)! The original recipe (minus the strawberries, obviously ) can be added to coffee for sort of a cappuccino drink.

If he's really hung up on a powder, something like hemp protein (disclaimer...some people might not consider this TF) as the PP suggested could be a better (not perfect, but better) option.

Nutiva's is non-gmo, no solvents like hexane, etc

eta: for anyone worried about drinking raw eggs, I read that Alton Brown said on his show the risk of salmonella is 1 in 30,000 (0.003%). Lower w/ happy, healthy chickens, and you can wash the shells first a bit to further decrease any "risk". YMMV w/ how comfortable you both are w/ that. It eased my mind a lot! Mercola cautions against pg women eating too many raw whites as this can set up biotin imbalances apparently. He talks about raw yolks, cooked whites for non-pg people worried about the biotin imbalance. I just blend mine and don't worry about it

I would avoid it for the reasons others mentioned above. I don't know if you can use it on a TF diet but most brands of rice protein doesn't have added sugar. I mix it with some fruit, fruit puree, water, ice, and/or yogurt. I can't stand eggs and being pregnant I can't meat lately so this is how I get a litle extra protein.

All I could find about it on the WAP site was that processing at high temps damages the protein. So if you're going to get whey protein powder, look for the kind that is processed at low temp.

About eggs - washing the shells pushes the bacteria through the porous shell and into the white of the egg. In France it's illegal to sell washed eggs, for that reason.

I already do raw egg smoothies myself everyday, so no worries there. I ended up getting some hemp protein from the HFS, no "bad stuff" in it. I will do this for awhile, til he realizes the extra cost is not worth it when I can make him one with raw cream and pastured eggs and fruit and CO. Stuff we already have on hand...thanks for the input!

I have the exact same issue, my hubby just started lifting in preparation for law enforcement tests. He also is stuck on the powders as the thing to drink after a work out, and wants something really easy to prepare. I got some samples of the Bio-Chem Berries and Whey powder, and they were actually really yummy. It's low temp processed whey protein, organic berries, and organic sugar and stevia. It has 20 grams of protein on it's own. I ended up buying a canister of the chocolate ultimate protein system also by bio-chem because it had 40g per serving. My hubby puts on muscle at an astounding rate naturally, so I think he needs a lot of protein. One thing that is nice is that I have to eat low carb to keep my weight down, but DH loves his pasta and pizza, so I feel like I am denying him if I don't make those things. But now because of his working out he wants to cut the refined carbs out too.
