silly question about BSJ

Ok, so I got the pattern in the last swap and I started snooping more on Rav to see what people had to say... so is it really done in fingering weight yarn?! I guess I am not much of a guage person (pretend there is a duck and cover emoticon here) so I'd rather someone just tell me what weight yarn and what needles to use. I want to make something for a friend who is due in early June. Thanks!

My son was on the big side, but the one I made with Koigu KPPM and size 4 needles fits him just fine and should continue to do so through the summer at least and probably into the fall. At a guess I'd say my gauge was around 6sts/inch.

I meant to include this with the pattern, but of course forgot - check out the KnitWiki BSJ page for tons of great info.

The weight of the yarn will determine the size of the sweater. Unless you're knitting it for a newborn, I wouldn't use fingering weight. Even using light worsted, my DS couldn't wear the sweater much past 9-12mo size.
