I got mastitis!

Whew! That stuff is NASTY! Wednesday i felt like I'd overdone it a bit, and noticed a bit of tenderness in my left breast-but it was only upon latching on, so I figured it was leftover irritation from some of the yarnking around the LO has been doing. By 2am my back was KILLING me, and I felt like I might have a fever, but the thermometer was a bit too cold to work with. By 6am, all I could do was huddle under the covers and shiver. It took every ounce of strength I had just too position my baby so she could latch on and in truth, I couldn't have cared less if someone had just popped a bottle in her mouth and let her glug down a bunch of formula and I never breastfed a single day again.

My temp was 103.6, I could hardly walk from the back and thigh pain, I couldn't think clearly and frankly I felt like I'd been hit by a mack truck. AND all the while, my breast pain itself was MINOR-as if I'd spent a minute or two permitting a bad latch.

My midwife diagnosed me with mastitis, and I must admit, I was skeptical. I wasn't really presenting with any of the symptoms I remember from seeing it in cats or dogs. There was no rock hard boob, red streaks, or even much pain. I started on antibiotics, and the fever peaked at 104.6. By 5pm Wednesday afternoon, I'd sweated the worst of it out. I slept a LOT, and DH bless his heart, took over night time baby co-sleeping duty. He just handed her over for feedings. It really helped. Today has been MUCH better, and I'm feeling more like my old self, though interestingly, I have more breast pain-but we took a trip that kept the LO alseep longer than she would normally, so the boobs just didn't get emptied as often as they usually do.

Anyway, I wanted to post about the experience-incase anyone else suffers from something similar. Kellymoms.com states that 20% of moms will suffer from mastitis in the Western world, and most will get it within a few weeks of delivery-so watch yourself girls!

Mastitis is one of my worst fears right now. When I found a hot lump man.. I was in the shower rubbing that crap out for HOURS. And it was right next to my nipple. If I couldn't take standing in the shower anymore I was in the livingroom with the boob in a hot bowl of water just streaming into it. I was NOT going to get mastitis LOL

You poor thing. I feel so awful for you.

Oh you poor thing! I know how rough it is, I had it with DS years ago and it was awful! I hope you are feeling better soon

Man, you've had some rough issues with boobies lately. Glad you are feeling better!

Ouch! I'm so sorry. I hope it clears up quickly.

Don't forget to take your probiotics!

Oh how awful! That is one thing I have never had (knock on wood!!) but have seen some women really sick with it at my job in the ER. I second the pp recommendation on probiotics. Glad to hear you are starting to feel better.

Oh man, that bites. I'm glad you're feeling better, though. I always get plugged ducts in my armpits when my milk comes in, and I work so hard to work them out because I'm terrified of getting mastitis.

:

I've been on antibotics for the past five days for this - feel much better... but now I'm afraid of getting a yeast infection and ending up with thrush or something.

LADIES- I second Alpaca, you need to watch out for this! My case has actually lowered my supply on that side (and that's Caleb's favorite! )
Last week we went into the ped and Caleb had only gained 2 oz- still not at his birthweight... now I have to supplement. And we are having some major issues over here.

Oh man, I'm so sorry you guys have had to go through this. I've had it at least once with both babes, and countless episodes of plugged ducts. Not sure why I'm so prone to it -- I know all the tricks to avoid it and all the things that can cause it. But I'm thinking something about my boob structure or the consistency of my milk maybe makes me more susceptible. SO not looking forward to this side of breastfeeding. Strangely enough though, I tend to get it several months into breastfeeding, not in the early weeks.

Hope you both are 100% soon!

Ick. Have you got a good LC? If he's gaining, you should not HAVE to supplement. You've got some time.

It's certaintly possible. I have fluid-filled cysts in my armpits that block milk flow, causing plugged ducts. Kellymom.com has a couple articles about how soy lecithin supplements change milk consistency, making it flow through the breast better because it's less "sticky." I take 1600 mg three times a day and have had good results getting rid of the plugged ducts.

The weird thing for me is that I never even felt a plugged duct! It was just WHAMMO!

I got mastitis with my last one, omg it was hell. Keep nursing the owie side first, it hurts but it helps. And lotsa probiotics, yogurt, you know the drill!

Nope. I've contacted the LCs, they just tell me to continue to pump.

Mastitis sucks!
I was three days pp when I got it and my mw had called to check in on me and I told her I thought I was coming down with the flu. SHe asked how my breasts felt and I said, kinda sore but nothing major. Well, when I looked in the mirror it was red streak GALORE!!!!!!!
this time around I hit up the echinacea and vitamin C like crazy to help prevent. I had a very slight brush with thrush that I still fighting and staying on top of but isn't gone yet. Luckily he isn't presenting with mouth thrush either.

Yes, I third the WATCH OUT FOR THIIS warnings!!!
