I posted some NIP photos from the 1930s and 1940s last year and thought you might like to see some of the latest I've discovered.

Nursing in Public During Social Hour

Nursing Under the Trees, 1939

Not a NIP photo, but nice breastfeeding photo nevertheless. Coal Miner's Wife, Breastfeeding 1938

Thanks!

I find it strange that our great grandparents were more comfortable with the natural purpose of breasts than we are. I know it happened with the social/sexual repression of the fifties, but you'd think we'd have come out of it by now!!

I really love the nursing under the trees pictures. It looks so serene!

I don't know if we'll ever be able to go back to this...where no one (not even men) bats an eye while in the presence of a breastfeeding mother.

I think we have and that's the problem. Breast are for selling sex now, not feeding babies. Sad huh?

Awesome pics BTW!

Great pictures. I was even surprised to see the "indiscreet" (I hate that word, but I think you all here know what I mean) nursing in the first picture. Why the heck are we so puritanical now??? Good grief.

The most moving breastfeeding picture (actually - ANY picture) I've ever seen was a picture from the 40's. It was incredibly sad (war), but it showed a mother nursing an older baby for comfort, and it was very, very moving.

That's great!

Wow, those are gorgeous. I love 1930s photos period, but 1930s NIP photos are even better. That one of the itinerant cane worker's wive under the tree is jsut gorgeous, and the lady in the social photo looks so ruddy and healthy and cheery. You know she made a kick ass apple pie.
We should start our own NIP photo album here. I don't even care if pervy old men find it and want to look at it for kicks; I think it would be cool to document how beautiful breastfeeding is.

Great pictures, thanks so much for sharing

Its up to us to create a community where no one bats an eyelid at NIP. It comes from us spreading the knowledge and love (about breastfeeding) to our nearest and dearest so they in turn can spread the love even further.
the community where I live is an EXTREMLEY child-centric place. No one would dream of putting their needs in front of that of a childs, especially for feeling "uncomfortable". NIP is this community is accepted, normalised and encouraged. I feel lucky to be here.

I love those photos, too! thanks for sharing them.
I wanted to say that I have had some very positive experiences NIP - DH is English, and when DS was about 13 mos old we were all in a tea shop in England, and DS needed to nurse (wanted? needed?) so, I took a deep breath and went for it at the table. This nice older woman nearby leaned over and said how nice it was to see someone breastfeeding and she wished more people did.

My grandmother said that growing up in the country in the 1930s "everybody" nursed their babies, some 2 year olds nursed (oh the horror!), and some children wanted to nurse after their younger siblings were born.

My grandmother moved to the city and got married, and BFing "just wasn't done". She said the dr who delivered my dad and his brothers asked her once if she wanted to BF, but encouraged FFing so that's exactly what she did Anyway, she was too shy to BF, she said.
