I bet a lot of women made them themselves! And, it's probably mostly all they wore, too. With no birth control, my great grandmother had 14 children within a span of 20 years! I guess she alternated between maternity clothes and nursing wear

they probably had better nursing attire in the 30's. I bought an Amish pattern for a nursing dress and that pattern probably hasn't changed in 100 years. Nursing clothes used to be nice looking. I've seen several artist's depictions of Mary and Jesus and Mary is wearing some gorgeous kind of shirt that works for nursing too.
