TV free daycare

Our current dc has been increasing their "movie days" from an occasional thing to every Friday. That, plus a few other issues, has prompted us to look for a new dc. We toured a center today and I noticed that there was a tv in the upstairs hall so I asked the director how often they show movies. The director looked at me like I was nuts and said "Never! That's just for teacher training during their break." She also said that was the first time anyone had ever asked that question
But, it looks like we found our new center! Yay!

I'm sorry, I realize this is NOT the point... but you can't do teacher training during a break. If you do its not a break. I hope that was a miscommunication, because if not then their workers' rights are being violated.

But congrats on finding a better dc!

Yay for you! I used to work for a daycare where TV use was totally unregulated. Some teachers would let the kids watch for hours. Then I worked for Head Start which allowed no TV at all, ever. It was a much better setting for the children to learn and play.

The woman doing the tour wasn't sure what it was for and she said "maybe so they can watch training videos on their break" but she didn't sound very certain of that. It could have also been for a special event that they had a few nights prior. All I know is that it isn't for the kids.

Sorry to highjack...

Actually, in our state our teachers have to have 15 continuing ed hours per year and they do NOT have to be paid and often are not. If a training is mandatory (i.e. staff meeting or 1st Aid/CPR) then they are paid. In fact, I think it is a good idea for staff to use our video library and center computer to complete their in-service hours on breaks, especially for working parents.

Daycares require continuing ed? I did not know that. I don't think that's true everywhere.

There is a difference between CE and training... at least, I don't think they are interchangeable. Usually people pay for CE (although it is in many cases offered for free) and are paid for job training.

Anyway, yeah, this is a major hijack... sorry.

I don't think it is true everywhere either. In Illinois it is required in our licensing standards and IL is one of the "toughest" states when it comes to child care licensing.
