Not sure if this one is on this thread yet, but there are some brief moments shown of Morgan Spurlock & partner's home water birth at the end of his newish movie, Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?

Almost a celebrity homebirth -- boxing champion Laila Ali was planning a homebirth but it looks like she had to transfer. Congrats to her on a healthy baby boy.

Ali, 30, had planned to have a natural, home birth. But her publicist, Thea Ellis, said: "There were some surprises during labor that altered Laila's birth plan." She declined to elaborate, except to say: "Mom and baby are both healthy and happy."

I just saw Minnie Driver on Ellen today and she was planning a home birth, but ended up transferring.

Video of Minnie on Ellen.

Love Ellen, but Minnie is discussing having two false labors and she says "Wouldn't you want to go in for the cesarean?" Luckily Minnie explains her choice.

Yeah, I love Ellen too, but that wasn't cool!

We are big fans of Jim Gaffigan after seeing his Comedy Central special.
We bought our 16 year old his Beyond The Pale DVD for Christmas and it had a lot not included in the special. During his act he noted that he and his wife are homebirthers They already had one child at the time and she was expecting #2. His act is clean and hilarious, check it out

I just read that Stephen King had homebirths (well, his wife did) ... I'm not searching 23 pages to find out if it's already been mentioned, though. It's in Ina May's book.

Lisa Bonet had her third baby recently. Her first baby was born at home, so I assume the second two were also.

Minnie handled that comment very well, I am a fan now!

Her kid is adorable too:

This isn't a celebrity homebirth, but in the February 2009 issue of O, Oprah's magazine (p. 144) Isla Fisher (crazy redhead from Wedding Crashers, star of the new movie Confessions of a Shopaholic, and wife of Sasha Baron Cohen) lists the "5 books on my bookshelf right now" and one of them is Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. Isla says:

"Women are happy to tell you their terrifying birth stories, but nobody tells you the positive ones. So if you're going to have a baby, you have to read this -- it's a collection of stories of women's birth experiences, plus loads of practical information. In today's world of modern medicine, it's so easy to have the experience of pregnancy and birth taken out of your hands: You're measured and blood-tested and ultrasounded. Sometimes it feels as if the whole experience is happening to you. But women have the right to have the
birthing experience we desire -- whether it's a Cesarean or a natural birth -- and to have the fear of the pain removed. A friend, Naomi Watts, gave me this book when I was pregnant. It was such a special time for me, and it was such a relief to read these stories."

Another book she lists is The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf. Another one of my favorites!

Yes, Naomi Wolf met with Ina Mae Gaskin during her first pregnancy. Naomi had both her babies by caesarean section, the second one an elective repeat caesarean.

I am glad to read that about Isla Fischer. I have hopes for her.

Yeah, Naomi Wolf actually wrote a book called "Misconceptions." It's sort of about birth and motherhood from a feminist perspective. She delves a little bit into what's wrong with the hospital system of birth and mentions midwife care.
I identify as a feminist, but I had mixed feelings about the book itself. It's worth the read, but with a critical eye.

I had mixed feelings about her book also, and I said so somewhere else here on MDC a loong time ago and got flamed for it. For a feminist and journalist who did so much research, she knew what she was getting into more than the average woman, yet she went ahead with a traditional hospital birth even after meeting with Ina Mae Gaskin. I guess she did what she felt comfortable with, deep, down on a very basic level.

As for Isla Fischer, she is from Australia, I believe, so she has a different view, I hope, of childbirth. Her husband is from London, and I hope is does too.

Just thinking outside the old box can help open one's horizons on any subject.
