Anger over some people's attitudes towards public breastfeeding has inspired a Hobart woman to win a major art competition.

Kate Kelly took out the two-dimensional section of the Material Girl International Women's Day Art Competition in Burnie last night.

Her digital photograph All Things To All People is a parody about people's idea of maternal perfection. It portrays a modern version of the classical Madonna And Child image

Beautiful

I know it's "art" but there is no way that baby has a nipple in its mouth, the perspective/distance is all wrong.

Yeah, that! I do love the photo, though, as social commentary!

i was thinking the mum must have a really giant really stretchy boob.

If it was my boob it could be in the babies mouth... I have giant stretchy boobs... Not that it would be comfotable mind you, and I usually try to get DS in closer, but we've done it like that a few times when he was too fussy to adjust.

Okay, explain why this is so great to me, totally dense girl... Isn't the point that BF (especially NIP) isn't racy or sexy? (not that we need to be frumpy, either) All things to all people says to me that all we are only valuable to men as sex objects... am I totally not getting it? Is there something I'm missing?

It's a commentary about the Madonna/Whore dichotomy we have.

That a woman must on one hand be the total sex object hottie to please her man.

And at the same time, be a perfect mother. And the perfect mother, in our culture, is the VIRGIN Mary. No concidence.

This dichotomy pretty much guarantees that every woman will fail at being the ultimate woman (by this standard). Because being sexy is at odds with our vision of motherhood (which apparently involves chastness and virginity).

And nowhere is that dichotomy more apparent than how we see breasts. Breasts are seen in our culture as sexual objects. So when we use them as maternal, um, objects, it causes issues for people who see them as sexual objects.

Very nicely phrased indeed.

It's beautiful. Too bad the baby not wearing a cloth diaper, too.

I got the impression that the woman is dressed for working in an office. I don't see the sexy connection.

Oh, good. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think it would have made more sense if there was also some kind of visible lingerie....so she's the Mother/CEO/Hot Wife 'Cause she really just looks like a legal secretary breastfeeding....
