Which sling: Moby or Maya?

Okay, I'm going to order a sling today and can't decide between the Moby or Maya. I like the Moby because it seems like it would be easier on the back (I have a bad back) but it seems hard to put on and also like it will be hot hot hot this summer. I also like the Maya wrap because it's simple and easy to adjust (and possibly cooler to wear and for the baby in the summer) Any opinions?

Thanks!

nak..sorry so messy
i love the bali baby breeze.....from gypsymama.com

its "gauze" wrap very cool and not stretchy. i didnt like the stretchy wraps. they gave me the "is-the-baby-about-to-fall-out-" feeling

if you're only going to buy one carrier and want it to last into toddlerhood and you've got back issues, i'd suggest either a woven wrap (like a didymos) or a mei tai.

stretchy wraps like the moby are nice in the very early days, but aren't useful long term (especially if you have a heavy baby). and yeah, it's going to be hot in the summer IMO. if you're thinking about a ring sling, i wouldn't really suggest a Maya - i'd get one from Jan at Sleeping Baby Productions. her prices are probably about half what Maya Wrap charges and her shoulder design is soooo much more comfy. there are lots of very nice ring slings on the market, but her prices are just phenomenal. if you want something super pretty and have money to spend, there are tons of options that'll make you happier than a maya wrap. if you do get a maya, make sure you get the lightly padded one.

but my favorite birth to toddlerhood carrier hands-down is a mei tai. you can't go wrong with something like a Kozy or a babyhawk, though there are many great mei tai's on the market beyond those, too.

hope that helped a little

The Maya is easier than any kind of wrap. As wraps go, I'm not a fan of the Moby and other knit wraps; once baby gets over 15 pounds or so, they pull out of place really easily.

I've got one of the woven wraps from theportablebaby.com and then a Maya left over from DS's newborn period. I'll probably switch off between them.

If you want a cheap & fake Moby, go to the fabric store and buy 5-6 yards of a cotton jersey knit (the kind that curls up at the ends) on sale, and then cut it down the middle (following the length). Then you end up with two imitation moby wraps at less than the price of one, and with no sewing needed! Ours are a nice turquoise color For tying/wearing instructions, just use the Moby website.

We also found a couple of used, cheap slings - one ring sling (diaperswappers.com) and one new native (free, friend). And we received Becos as gifts - trendy, I know, but I'm super excited about them...

I have enjoyed my Moby with the newborn. I have a Maya Wrap I bought with my son and will use once the new one can sit up.

I dream of a Catbird mei tai.

If you like to walk I wouldn't go with a Moby. I have had small babies and it feels like they are hanging down by my waist after a few blocks. I much prefer a ring sling or my Ergo with infant insert.

We have a hotsling and a moby. The moby was given to us by someone who had it and didn't like it. Right now, I prefer it! The hotsling keeps falling off my shoulder and is heavy feeling and doesn't seem so secure. I like that I can wrap him up in the moby and he is very secure--we walked at least 3 miles in it yesterday! I like that my waist does a lot of the weight bearing--it's like having a heavy backpack with a seatbelt thing; when you wear it that way, it feels way better on your shoulders and back. I think it will be handy once I can carry him on my back, too. The downside is that it is a lot of fabric, so it is quite warm for the wearer as well as the baby, and it takes a little time to get situated with it.

So, I'm still searching for the ideal sling, but goodness, these things are expensive, considering what they are. I'd like to try out a ring sling, but am hesitant to buy one, if it will feel as heavy as the hotsling.

Thanks Mama's! I'm glad I didn't purchase one yesterday. I'll have to do some sleuthing today. I got a peanut shell for my shower but it doesn't feel very accomodating to me or the baby. There is no stretch to it and it feels stiff so I wanted something else that could be more versatile. The search continues...

I made a ring sling from the instructions on the maya site. It took me 5 minutes to make and cost me a total of $10 (4 for 2 yards of fabric, 6 to import rings from the U.S).

Super easy and it works great.
