17 mo. olds hands...

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with them? They are cracking now and bleeding. I thought it was from him sucking his thumb and making it dry, but now both hands are covered. It looks SO painful!

BTW, he's had it for a few weeks or longer. I lotion him after baths twice a week, I don't really wash his hands, just wipe them off with a wipe.

yikes, poor guy! I have several suggestions. When I was in Mexico on a missions trip I used wipes to clean my body since running water wasn't good or abundant. My hands started drying and peeling. As soon as I was home it cleared up.
Second. It could possibly be a fungus. When dh had a foot fungus his feet started doing that. I got him a natural fungus ointment at the whole foods store. I can't remember what it was. I threw out the bottle because of expiration

Thanks. I *think* I may have the same thing on two of my fingers but its nowhere near as bad as his. And last night was awful. He sucks his thumb and it was cracked so he was up all night crying because it hurt so bad. I get the cracks on the side of my finger, it feels like my finger is ripped in half. And he has cracks all over his palms now too. I put some Lansinoh on it because I used in on my nipples for breastfeeding and it was safe, but I don't know what else to do. I mean, he's a baby, his hands are ALWAYS in his mouth, I can't put just anything on there, kwim. Oh, I also put some coconut oil on them yesterday.

I am going to stop using wipes on his hands, and probably any soap. I hear him waking up, so I may check his hands and if they are still real bad maybe take him to the dr.

Thanks for replying.

Poor Baby!

Sorry I don't have any suggestion except to maybe take him to see a Dr or dermatologist...I just wanted to offer my sympathy

I get a rash that looks similar under my engagment ring when I wear it. The ring is white gold and I understand it's common to react to the nickel in the alloy (it can vary with with your hormonal state, for me I react worse when I'm pregnant, which granted has nothing to do with this.) I can't imagine how he could have the same reaction as me, (white gold gloves?) but if it's the same kind of rash, it clears up within a week or two after I take the ring off. It doesn't hurt at all, just itches a little.

That's what my friends hands look like if she touches dish soap, she's highly allergic. I would bring him to the dermo. Poor babe.

It looks like some type of eczema to me. I think it's a good idea to stop using soap and wipes on his hands for now. Lansinoh sounds like a good idea for a barrier cream, as long as he isn't reacting to that.

Thanks. I think it must be a reaction to wipes or dish soap. We have washed his hands a few times lately at the kitchen sink when he comes in from playing outside. And my hands are the same way, so you can guess who does the dishes around here. I bought some Seventh Generation free and clear dish soap the other day, but was trying to use up what we had left of the other before switching over. Urgh. I am going to switch immediately, but still keep his hands out of the soap altogether. I have MAJOR issues with sensitive skin, so I guess he's taking after me.

His hands look about the same this morning. I think I will just keep an eye on him this weekend, soap free, and if it doesn't help we'll take him in.

I would also cut out the soap/wipes and just wash in luke warm water. I would also see what the ped says about what to put on them, I don't think I would want to just put any old lotion on them. Especially anything scented would be bad. That may irritate them more. I think that needs a trip to the ped.

Does he have any other symptoms, like fever, rash, redness in the whites of the eye?

He had a fever of 99.7 last night, and has felt warm for a few days. He also has a rash on his arms, but it doesn't look like this. Just small red dots underneath his forearms.

That is terrible. I would take him to a doctor and talk about all the things you think he might be allergic to. It could also be dry weather and lots of handwashing. Baby aquafor does wonders for this type of thing. Really, really good at helping dry hands and is gentle enough to not further irritate (as opposed to more "natural" products which can further irritate)

Not to be alarmist - I'm so not, I promise! - but I would take him today. It is probably nothing, but there's a teeny chance it could be something serious, like Kawasaki disease.

Yikes, I looked at that earlier, but I'm trying to convince myself that its not that. I am going to look again.

I think I'd rather err on the side of safety, kwim? I'm sure it will be nothing.

I'm calling dr.s now.

Okay, I've called 3 drs, all out of town or off for the weekend. Our regular dr. just let us know he doesn't accept our insurance anymore, not that it matters he is also out of town. Asheby is napping now. He still has cracked hands but no fever. No redness in eyes, but a bit of a rash on his arms.

I don't know what to do!! It is already 2pm here, and everything takes at least an hour to drive to. I don't know if I should just wait until Monday and see if it is any better, or find some more drs to call and see if they can get us in. Not many people take our insurance, and if they do, they won't take walkins. What on earth are drs for anyway, if you can't get in when you are sick?!!?

Is there a primacare (or something like that) near you?

I would call drs and specifically say that your family doctor is out of town and that you think your child has kawasaki's and you NEED someone to PLEASE take a look at him.

It is Friday. No way would I wait until Monday.

A very close friend of mine's son ha Kawasaki disease and he nearly died. It started on his hands and arms and looked like severe excema and went worse and worse.

Kawasaki disease affects the heart and heart function and can lead to life long heart problems. Her son is 5 now and has to go every 3 months for tests and 24 hour monitoring every 6 months.

Go to the hospital if you have to and get looked at mama. Don't wait! It is much better to be safe than sorry and get some treatement on his hands. if nothinge lse than to relive the pain and cure it before impetigo sets in on the cracks.
