Any experience with male children (scrotum)??? HELP!

I notice it looks a little red, which probably comes from me rubbing feces off (maybe I am rubbing too hard ) What can I apply to it????

p.s. I am talking about his scrotum.

A lot of hormones are transfered during birth and this can affect the genitals and overall skin look of a child. The tip of the foreskin (if this is what you are referring to) is often red at the end. This is normal variation for many infants. My son always has a reddish tip in comparison to his shaft skin.

The only time you need to start worrying is if urination problem occur, you get pus, fever or excessive swelling (and sometimes even these things are par for the course-- swelling can sometimes be smegma pearls, etcetc)

I wouldnt worry about it

If you feel you really need to put something on there to at least try and really do feel something is wrong, a simple barrier diaper rash cream will work. But, like I said, if it stays reddish, that could just be your son's normal look...as it is with mine.

Also, if you are having problems removing poop from the foreskin without retracting (remember, never retract!) try using a peri bottle of warm water to help out!

Not in your DDC but saw this in new posts...

First off - CONGRATS!!

I remember with my little guy he was red for awhile...carriebft gave you some good advice.

l also found that placing a nice warm cloth wipe on the area for a bit would help get them clean!

to give you an idea, the tip of my son's foreskin always looks like a pair of lips in comparison to the rest of his penis. tmi I know, but I think that can be helpful since many can get a little worried when they see redness.

If any skin in the diaper area looks irritated, I just clean it, dry it and dab a little neosporin on it. The tip of my ds's wee looks a bit red compared to the rest of his skin but I figured that was normal for an intact penis.

In boys, the scrotum (the sack containing the testicles) often looks swollen. This is usually due to a hydrocele, a common collection of fluid in the scrotum of infant boys that usually disappears during the first 3 to 6 months. You should consult your doctor about swelling or bulging in your son's scrotum or groin area that persists beyond 3 to 6 months or that seems to come and go. That may indicate the presence of an inguinal hernia, which usually requires surgical treatment. The testicles of newborn boys may be difficult to feel in the swollen scrotum. Muscles attached to the testicles pull them up into the groin briskly when the genital area is touched or exposed to a cool environment. Infant boys also normally experience frequent penile erections, often just before they urinate.
This same kind of idea can cause redness, too.

If it is from the rubbing of wipes, I would def try the peri bottle idea for big poops. Also, try some diaper free time (maybe on a waterproof mat or holding a towel between you so you dont get soaked )

I would take him to a doc if the redness really persists a lot though...not sure what it can possibly mean though.

Boys' testicles often look red and swollen soon after birth because of the hormones they pick up from the mother, too.

Googled around a found it could be a hernia if it persists and is blueish as well...not to scare you but just wanted to put that out there in case maybe you wanted to have it checked if it stays red and doesn't get better.

I was going to try putting olive oil on it to keep it from getting chapped .......

Weleda also makes a great caledula based diaper cream.

Would a health food store sale it?

i second the weleda recommendation - though i'd go for the straight calendula cream vs. the diaper ointment. it is nice and gentle, antimicrobial, and absorbs into the skin so it doesn't mess with cloth diaper absorbency.

our little guy's bits and pieces (not circumcised) are also little red at the end, and keep collecting lint (from the cd, I assume) and white stuff (skin?)...is this normal? We're dipping him in the bath daily (not with soap), which seems to help somewhat.

Be careful when airing him out...I got splattered with bright yellow poop the other day, and then peed on. (I only have sisters, so this boy stuff is all new to me.)

1. When do you began to use soap in the babies bath ??

2. I've been getting peed on so much!! LOL

3. My lo crapped all over his hand today ! gotta love it

I didn't use soap for a really long time, just because I didn't need to- water worked fine for us. Sometimes we used shampoo for cradle cap, but only once in a while.

Sounds pretty normal to me... both my boys were red for a while. As long as it's not getting chapped, or turning any other colors...

We didn't really use soap for a long time (maybe when he was 6 months??). We occasionally washed his diaper area with soap and water, but before he started solids, he didn't need anything beyond a good rinse with water.

I found when I started washing his hair with soap, his cradle cap got worse.

As far as the scrotum issue goes, my DH has olive skin and DS takes after him. Both of their scrotums are actually purplish (DH moreso because I think puberty makes it darker, but DS' scrotum def has a purple tinge).

Good luck!
