FO on the yarn! (Guess what! I am dyeing right now!)

Like right now my pot is getting ready! Up first is some lena's meadow pf that I just don't feel. I am going to wilton leaf green, grape ka and blue ka it and see what happens. If that doesn't turn into a huge disaster I am going to try some bare cascade and some pink and orange ka. Will post pics later!

Finished and reskiened for the prettiness factor! I did 2 of each but seemed kinda too much to reskien it all since I will probably knit them right away! These will be longies for my babies!

so far it looks freakin awesome. But I have to bake it in the oven instead of zapping it- we don't have a zapper- boo.

Those colors are beautiful. How much kool aid did you use for each colors and why do you have to zap????

I used about 3 pkts/color/skien. The pf I dyed the skiens separately and used 3 blue and 3 purple and about 1/8-1/4 t wilton coloring. The cascade skiens I dyed at the same time and used 4 pkts orange, 5 pink lemonade, and 4 black cherry.

I don't know why you are supposed to zap them- just to set the dye I think. But I baked them in the oven at 250 for 40 min and let them cool and then I rinsed them and no color rinsed out so I think it worked!

I also dumped in some vinagar to each mix- just to be safe!

flapjack= the lena's meadow is really pretty- just not something that I loved. I sacraficed it to the name of kitchen science experiments.

Those are amazing. Exactly what I was scratching my head trying to figure out how I would do it. So, once you have your colours ready, how did you put them on the yarn? How do they not run together? The Wiltons colour, was it a paste? Did you have to spread it on? I got a TON of easter egg dying kits for pennies each the other day, and was thinking of trying to dye some yarn with those, (I saw a thread showing some really nice ones a while ago done this way.) but I think your colours are bolder than I would get. I like the more intense colours. Does anyone have a way to spark up the egg colours? What if I used a lot of them, made the dye super concentrated? What do you think? Sorry, I am not trying to take over your thread. Nice work, I am inspired by you!

Here is the site that will help you understand how to kool aid dye. You can use the easter egg dye but you have to remember when you use the Easter egg dye it require a cup of water and the less you have the more vibrate the colors will be. So you would probably need about 6 to make it bright colors but any hoot check out this Directions:http://www.woolworks.org/dyeing.html
here is another with picture to see how it works.

I have seen someone use Canning jar technique. I can't find the site. sorry.
I hope this helps you.

I took a big stock pot and put it on my stove and put in 3 wide mouth canning jars (my pot could fit 4 jars though). I have an inch or 2 of water in the stock pot around the jars. Then I put a couple of inches of water in each jar so that it would stay where it was. Then I divided up the hank (still in a hank) and shoved thirds of it in the jars. Then I poured the koolaid mix over it. I ended up kind of shifting the yarn between the jars so I dyed all of it. All this time my water was hot- but not boiling.

I did use vinager in the koolaid and food coloring mixes. And baked the yarn in a roaster of water to kind of set it. I would mix lots of packets of easter egg dye in the water to get a darker color.

good luck and have fun with it!

would it be rude to knock on your neighbors door and ask if they could zap yarn for you?
